Causes of weak, orange spark at coil 700 1988

In trouble shooting the no start on the 744T I found the spark from the coil to ground to be orange and not the desired blue/white.

Besides the coil itself what else might be contributing to the weak spark?

Randy

I always thought the electric spark that ionizes oxygen only made blue sparks.

I recently was getting poor/intermittant spark from bad wires. One could easily tell bad wire by opening the hood when it was dark out. I could see blue light at the poor connections at the boot.

A weak battery can cause this. It can sound good turning over, but not start. More noticeable with turbos. Have you jumped it to see if it will start ?

My post was concerning a weak spark that I found while troubleshooting a no start situation after the car slid on slippery streets and impacted the curb.

In the end the problem turned out to be the intank pump. The impact pulled the pump loose and created an open space on the fuel pickup. I added fuel and once it was up over the open space and I purged the line of air I had fuel and pressure at the rail and the car started.

I was looking for what might contribute to the weak spark that I came across in trying to figure out the no start.

Sorry that I did not make that clear in starting this thread.

      Randy

My 1989 244 has an orange spark, and it starts well and runs fine. I would look elsewhere for your no-start problem.

R, you might check that a full battery voltage is present at the coil, as any voltage drop would affect the coil output.

Also, it would be wise to check the grounding of the ignition computer, because a weak ground would also be a problem.

Ditto Goatman. You don't want to find any voltage drop at the coil lugs.
I think that you can place your voltmeter accross the two lugs of the coil and see any bad connections since the grounded lug at the coil goes back to gnd thru the power stage and control unit.
You should see more than battery voltage with the car running: <14VDC
Dont overlook a bad coil HV wire!

      Happy holidays, Bill
