timing belt alignment question 200

I know there is a ton of timing belt alignment questions but I'm still confused as to what the correct reference is to the crankshaft sprocket. The pictures in the green manual and Bentley are lacking in detail. What I aligned it to was the U groove cut into the belt guide washer. I put the U grooved washer on the outside. I did the alignment by wraping the belt to the left side of the sprocket until the 2 lines lined up with this groove. There is also a line mark on the crankshaft snub that I'm not sure if I should have used instead.

If the outer guide washer is keyed on the crankshaft that is correct. This slot should also line up with a mark (protrusion) on the aluminum seal housing. I don't worry about marks on the TB, just line up the shafts correctly. I steal a small make-up mirror from my wife and use a flash light to make sure the intermediate and crankshaft marks are perfect. There is also a tick mark on the distributor that the rotor should point to when all is good. Dan

That's exactly the detail I needed. The pictures in the manuals aren't very clear.

thanks

That's a great LINK. I have that in my FAVORITES.

Yeah, that double stripe on the Belt for the Crank is useless.

Someone mentioned to take White-Out and mark the Crank Gear 4 teeth CounterClockwise from the TDC mark Then mark 4 teeth on the belt away from the Double line. That will help you line up all three marks with their respective gears and Sprockets. I'll remember that ..next time.
