Good sleuthing.
You can replace dimmer with one from a junker. Or I'm pretty sure fcpgroton.com will sell you a new one, not too pricey. Junker one should be fine.
It's tempting to leave the dimmer out and just a jumper wire in place - because you'll have brighter illumination that way. But I caution you against doing this; get a replacement dimmer.
Reason is, even at it's brightest setting the dimmer still provides some resistance. This limits the voltage to the rather expensive halogen bulbs that illuminate the '89+ cluster. If you allow them to get full voltage you'll be replacing them sooner. They cost about $9-10 each. '89's use these newer more expensive bulbs. My '86 used the older, duller, less expensive bulbs. Different fitting; you can't easily change the bulb type.
If you have the time at the junkyard, it's good to harvest spare bulbs. Also get the smaller ones that illuminate the P-R-N-D-2-1 shifter and the accessory button illumination and the center console glow bulbs. All those are the same type bulb, as I recall. Nice to have a bunch of those on hand when yours go out one day.
