Tree leaves accumulating inside of cabin. 200 1977

Whilst removing my carpeting I discovered many leaves under my carpet, along with soaked carpet pads and some rust. I have read other posts about the rocker panels, but I cannot fathom how these leaves got inside.

Should I dismantle my center console?

Leaves fall in the grilled opening between the hood and the windshield, as Jim describes, end up in the HV ducting under the floor (and other places). To stop their entry, find another place to park or buy or make a cover for the air intake which will prevent leaves dropping in, but allow air in which comes aft along the hood.

Can I remove that grilled opening between the hood and the windshield?

I fear not. But what is the best way to get in there?

These leaves did not float up through the floor, they were piled nicely aside the blower assy on both sides as if they fell in. I shall observe the cowl and blower again in the light of the day.

No, the grille is built into the cowl and is the air intake for the passenger compartment HVAC. All you can do is park differently and/or install a shield so that surface air is picked up, but not falling leaves.

There are plastic plugs which seal openings into the rocker panels. You can find these under the carpet where the carpet rises to meet the door sill. If those plugs are loose or missing, water and leaves can leak out and get under the carpet. Also be sure the drains in the rocker panels are open.

It would be a good idea this summer, when the rocker panel contents are dry, to vacuum out the leaves and trash from the rocker panels.

Here is a photo worth a thousand words.

Note that your 700 could be different.

For that plug on a 240:

            1. Open the driver's door

            2. Remove the plastic threshhold by pulling it up

            3. Push the vertical edge of the carpet inboard and peek/feel down behind it.

            4. Once you have found that one, the other two on that side are spaced out further toward the rear. Those on the passenger side side are directly opposite.

To repeat, the 700 series may not be the same.

              Here is another picture.

By the way the inside of the rocker panel was free and clear. No dust or dirt was inside, what gives?

Where can I shove a hanger piece to unlodge the cr-- out?

              No jokes please :)
