544 Sport on I-70 Today (December 26) 444-544

Despite owning two 122s, I've never seen a 544 in action on the highway. Today (Wednesday December 26), I was driving home to St. Louis from the Christmas holiday in Kansas City, when (between Blue Springs and Odessa, MO) I came upon a light blue 544 sport with Colorado plates cruising on east-bound I-70.

I've never wished so hard that I was in one of my two Amazons, as when I pulled up behind this little beauty. As I cruised by in my heavily-laden 1995 940 wagon, sporting my VCOA badge, I gave the driver a Thumbs-Up, and continued onward with the necessary flow of traffic. My wife said this elicited a funny look from the driver, who could not possibly be ignorant of the attention such a classic car brings...

We lost the car completely by Concordia, MO - when I pulled off to check on my flesh-and-blood baby daughter - and I did not catch up with this beauty of classic Swedish engineering by the time we hit our Columbia, MO pit-stop.

So... is the driver a BB member? Does anyone know who this is? Heading east was definitely the wrong way for Colorado, so I've no clue where this car was heading.

Whoever the owner is, they havne't registered their car on Tony's site:

I guess some people don't like to put their info on the web. Maybe they're afraid it would invite a theft? Just thinking this may be the case since I watched Gone in 60 Seconds over the holiday. :)

My car isn't worth stealing. It is a car only its mother could love. A friend recently called it the "beast."

lol

I do drive it on the Freeways around Phoenix, though.

Nah,

If the guy didn't acknowledge your thumbs up he was unenlightened or a moron.

I was driving my 122 wagon years ago from Durango to Albuquerque and got a little acknowledgment in someone in an 940 or an 850. I was surprised as most people who drive those cars were oblivious to the Volvo history. It's all backwards for a 544 driver to ignore a 940 driver though. Meebe he was too stoned to see youre grille badge :-)

Unenlightened stoner moron. Wow.

Maybe the 544 driver simply isn't interested in the 940 series cars. I have no interest whatsover in anything newer than 1971 myself - nothing wrong with that newer stuff and I'm glad others like it... but it doesn't fuel my fire in the slightest.

People in square model Volvos rarely even notice the roundfendered models. I get MANY more waves and thumbs ups from people driving cars other than Volvos. They think a PV looks like a Ford and that an Amazon looks like a VW Notchback.

Most of the people I know who drive newer Volvo series cars drive them because they fit a "car" need. Not because of any level of enthusiasm or passion. My sister drives an S60 because it has airbags. Her only other care about cars is that she likes blue.

'course lots of them newer model folks look down upon the vintage ilk. Seems we just don't keep up with the times.

I always wave back to anyone who initiates. But I don't go out of my way to give a happy gesture to bluehairs driving clapped out 740 wagons. Duh.

I've only seen old Volvo's on the road when the V44 club came to the U.S. I sometimes see Amazons, but they are few and far between.

Sometimes other Volvo drivers are interested enough to ask (at stop lights) about my car, and I've nearly caused accidents from drivers trying to see the VOLVO logo on the front to determine what kind of car it is.

I guess I should get the trunk logo and put it back on...

I hear about a lot of old Volvos, but I have to go hunt them down, as none of them seem to be on the road.

Which is strange, considering that all those old cars are said to 'run great' but no one is driving them. Perhaps the body design causes people to think they are much older models than they actually are.

Probably the most common question after 'What is it?' is 'Can you still get parts for it?'

It's easier to find PV544 parts than 2003 Dodge truck parts...

You might try the VCOA website to see if the car shows up in any photographs.

Meanwhile, mine remains my daily driver. It's just too fun to drive!

Steve
