Battery cable meltdown 700 1989

Today I talked to my friend who I sold my former 89 745 to, a few years ago. Hadn't seen him in a while. I was surprised when he told me the car had caught fire, especially as it was sitting in the driveway, looking about like it always has. He said that one day, he went to start it, and it wouldn't start, and a big cloud of white smoke came out from under the hood. It is not completely clear to me what happened next, whether it went out by itself or had to be extinguished. He had it towed to his regular indy shop (not Volvo specialists, but competent and reasonably honest) and $500 later, was back on the road. From what I could tell, by all the new parts under the hood, was that the positive battery cable had chafed through and shorted to ground, somewhere near the front of the engine. The battery discharged itself rapidly and was ruined, and the resulting heat melted a power steering hose. For whatever reason, the shop replaced both battery cables. I was surprised to see that the alternator was unaffected, and appears to still be the original one, at something over 360K miles. (though I did replace the brushes once, when I had the car) I told him he was lucky it didn't burn to the ground.

Something to keep in mind if you are working on anything in that area---might be a good idea to check the condition of those cables.......

I have heard of this before. I also belong to the UK Volvo Owner's Group and there was a post over the summer of a guy who took his 700 to Spain on vacation and had the same thing happen, leaving him stranded there. It's not an uncommon problem.

    Battery cable meltdown 700 1989

This happened to my friend several years ago.

Just had driven the 500 miles from Connecticut to D.C. in a high-miles 1988 744GLE. Parked it at a hotel, checked in, family went inside, looked out the window, car's on fire!!! Burned it to the ground. Bummer too because it was a 5-speed car.

Another 88 740 we pulled the engine on had a broken negative cable at the block. Definitely a weak spot on these cars. Check yours if you own a 740 pre-1990. The insulation splits and the red and blue cables can short where they cross along the right side of the crossmember.

There was a recall on the battery cable of our '88 745 GLE, maybe there was a recall on your car also.

The original owner of my car DID NOT have the repair done, my dealer checked all recalls during our first service after purchase.

Volvo put a new cable in the car.

You might check his car's VIN for a recall, just for kicks.

When I went through my current car (88 745 GLE) after buying it, I noticed some problems with brittle insulation on the original battery cable assembly (both cables are bundled together in a plastic outer sleeve) so I replaced it with one from one of the two 90s I parted out, which looked to be in much better condition.

Thanks for this posting. I still do not have my car back and the last time I checked the problem with the short was not located.... And this was after all the inputs from "Volve Brickboard". Now I will get the cables check and may changed.. JB

Main problem is that they ran both of the battery cables together in one sheath down to the subframe and out a big ass clamp around them to keep them from moving. They chaffe through the insulation right at the clamp and then it all melts down. I had one in my shop maybe two weeks ago. The kid got off lucky and needed only a battery recharge, both cables and he was good to go. Even at that though it is still in the area of $280.00 plus your tow.

The broken negative cable at the block is yet another problem. When I get a car towed in for a no crank condition it usually turns out to be that cable busted off.
