I had my odo stop. The problem was caused by a gear that is smaller than a dime and cost $20 to buy. It takes about 45 minutes to replace.

I am not as savy as some of the others here, but this is my logic: it is a fact that the odo gear is one of the Volvo 240's top-10 problems (one of the teeth breaks off - it has happened on both of the 240's that I have owned). If you buy one from the junk yard, what assurance do you have that the odo is in fact working? If I ever buy a speedo from a junk yard, I plan on replacing this gear before I put it in (I think that actually putting the gear in the odo takes less than 10 minutes, but accessing the speedo takes 45 minutes).

By the way - I think there are 2 speedo's for the 240. Read the model number on the face of the speedo.

Do the part numbers between the two odos match? If not, good luck. May I suggest that you take the gear out of the jy unit, and if it is good, put it in your old odo... might just fix it.
