Only Mild Panic ... So Far (Odometer Fix) 200 1987

Hey Guys,
I'm new to the forum and am really getting inspired to tackle loads of projects on my wagon, thanks to this great source (and my new Bentley). Today I am repairing my odo and aligning my crooked steering wheel.
Every has gone smoothly until I went back out to the car to reinstall the speedo box. Some of the labels I got from Staples to identify each wire had dropped off (It says removable on the package, but this is ridiculous!).
I think I'm good on all but one connector. It's a female end (accepts a blade connector) at about 4 o'clock at the speedometer looking at it from the back. Problem is, I have 2 wires left over, an all red one and a red and white striped one. They both have the same type connections as the one I need to connect to! Oh S@#t! Any expertise is most needed. Thanks in advance.
JimO

Leave the Red/White striped wire unconnected if you do not have a tachometer. I don't remember an all Red wire, I've got an Orange wire that connects at about the same location you are referring to that is for my cruise control.

The red and white striped wire with the female end is for the tachometer, if you have one. It goes on the tach terminal labeled "1" at the bottom, if you have the large tach. The solid red one... I don't know, but the point is if you don't have a tach, dont worry about the red/white one.

I began to think that both wires were for accessories. The solid red one is heavier gauge too. I buttoned it up the way it was and everything worked fine.

Now the bad news. I went for a short test drive and my odometer worked great ... for 2.7 miles, then stopped.

I got the replacement gear at my local PullaPart - it could be that it was about to go anyway, but it also occurred to me that there may have been a small piece of trash from the old gear left behind that caused it. The old one was pretty mangled. Anyway, square one.

I also tried and failed to get my Odometer running and made it just over a mile before it failed.

Go to http://odometergears.com/ and get one of his new gears. This is a tough little gear that will work for years to come. I have put over 26K on the one installed about a year and a half ago.

Regards,

Paul

I think you're right, Paul. I just examined the old gear closely under magnification and it's almost as if it's made of wax. It crumbles with just a touch of a fingernail. The junkyard part couldn't have been much better.

I'm in the same boat with my 89. My odo doesn't work, bought the gear, still inop. Bought a used cluster on eBay, said it worked. Installed it, still not working. Square one.

How is your electronic knowledge? Art has a really good trouble shooting guide on his website go to http://cleanflametrap.com/speedo.html . You will need a frequency source and a Oscilloscope, but he has excellent notes and good schematics.

I messed up my speedo when I did not get the motor plugged back into the board. The secret is do not take the motor off the board, pull it off still attached to the PCB.

Got a donor board and used a 9VAC 60Hz signal to test it out. Makes the speedo go 20 MPH. Knew I had it fixed and working before I installed it in the Instrument Cluster.

Worth taking a look at.

Regards,

Paul

Thankfully, my speedo works fine, 'cause what he's got going there is beyond me. I like his site, though, and have it my favorites when the time comes to get around to my blower motor.
