speedo cable M40/PV544 444-544

I converted my B16 to a B20/M40 trans. I went to hook up my speedo cable and there's not enough room to make the connection. I'm sure there's a right angle adaptor from someone, some place that will take care of this. Can anyone shed any light?
Thanks as always
Mike

Hello,

Do you know which M40 transmission?

Earlier M40 transmissions came with a smaller rear bearing and housing to hold it and the angle of the speedo drive gear is different than the later M40s.

Hi Eric,
It came out of a 1970 142S model is all I know.

Hello,

If I remember correctly, the larger bearing setup came on Volvos with B20 and that was 1969 and later Volvos.

So your transmission is probably the later setup that you do not want.

You can retro fit the earlier rear bearing retainer if you want.

Mike
I have seen this same problem recently. It sounds like you need to reroute the speedo cable so that it comes out of the same hole as the choke cables for the carbs on the passenger side of the battery. That way the cable isn't at such a sharp angle as it enters the transmission. Mine is done that way with no problem at all.

Mike,
Could you be a bit more specific as to what the cause of the problem is. Tunnel too narrow? Unable to clear the edge of the tunnel where the tunnel wall meets the floor? I'm not sure how different that area in the 444 is from the 544, but in the 544 the connection is very straight forward. I'm thinking that your transmission mount may not be allowing the transmission to come down low enough for the cable to clear the edge of tunnel-floor angle.

Hey Bob,
I hadn't thought about the trans. mount. I did have to fab a new mount for the M40 and I'll check that out. The problem is the speedo connection from the M40 is too close to the tunnel wall so that the cable is in too much of a bind to make the turn and connect if that makes any sense.
Thanks
Mike

Mike,
What Eric says may well be a factor, but, for whatever it's worth, on the PV544 the speedometer drive is positioned low enough so that the cable clears the tunnel-floor joint angle and bends forward only when it gets near the exhaust pipe. However, I'm not sure if 444 and 544 tunnels are the same. If you don't want to mess with the transmission mount, you might, rather than getting the expensive and somewhat failure-prone angle drive, want to consider Steve's solution. I haven't tried that one myself, but I like the idea.

Mike;

I have no specific experience with the 544, but it sounds like you may want a right angle speedo drive as was installed on the 1800s M41s (its about 2 inches long and has a worm gear to do the job)...you may want to jump over to that Forum and post a request...also, you may be able to do with one from another vehicle...I recall some are suitable (sorry, don't recall which).

Cheers
