Poor mileage, what else to check? 900 1993

Hello,

I have a '93 945T that I drive very easily - 60-65 on the freeway, never get into boost, light acceleration, lots of coasting and planning ahead, but I still only manage 20.5 mpg! My 245 with the same basic engine got ~24 mpg (only difference is the 245 had a manual trans, but the 945 auto trans has a longer overdrive).
I have replaced every possible tuneup part (plugs, wires, cap, rotor, oil+filter, k&n air filter), including the oxygen sensor. I was really hoping for an improvement after replacing the o2 sensor, but it was only 1/2 mpg better.
The tailpipe looks black, like it's too rich, but AFAIK there is nothing to adjust on the EFI system. The only other thing I can think of is the coolant temp sensor for the EFI. Does anyoe have specs on this? Any other ideas?
Oh, the engine has good compression and does not appear to burn oil, the brakes are not dragging, and tires have a few psi over suggested pressure.
Thanks,

Csaba

Poor mileage, what else to check? 900 1993

I experience the same mileage as you: 24 mpg for my 240 non-turbo, and 20 mpg form my 940 turbo. Both cars are automatic. Both cars are well tuned.

I've read that the difference is in the torque converter: the turbo does not have a lock-up converter, the non-turbo does have a lock-up torque converter. Don't think you can do anything to improve turbo milage, except drive downhill more often!

Poor mileage, what else to check? 900 1993

    Hi,
I am sailing in the same boat. I have drive 1991 940SE Turbo and my wife drive 1994 940 Turbo. MPG always stays around 19 what to say of 20. I am keeping both cars properly tuned, 3000 oil changed interval with filter, air filter and renewing/cleaning ignition parts at given interval. Both cars are filled every week and each cost 60 +/- US dollars. Given the gas prices, do we have to change our lifestyle and get into some small gas saver not life savers. OR the MPG can be improved. I read sometimes back when someone posted getting 34 on a turbo car. I only can dream of it. Some one please guide us.
    Thanks
    Ram

      Hello,

I read some older posts that using premium fuel improved mileage by ~10-15%.
I will try that, as premium is usually less than 10% more than regular.
I also removed the roofrack from the car to reduce drag and I turn the engine off at long lights, etc. Having a standard trans would help too.
