89 244 (auto) - shifter button does not pop up in reverse 200

Hi all-
My shifter button does not pop up when in reverse. It does pop up in all other gears, only not in reverse - what is the problem and what can I do?
Also, my reverse lights don't work, could the shifter button effect the function of the reverse lights at all? I don't like the fact that I can shift from reverse to park w/o pressing anything, that's a little scary. Any help is much appreciated. I'm guessing the shifter button has nothing to do with the lights (I'm thinking either the neutral safety switch or the connector in the trunk), but I want to know if there is a way to get the button popping up again.

Thanks.

I'm pretty sure that the button on your shifter is supposed to be that way.
As far as your rear lights...you might want to check your fuses first, then try and check the plugs on the backside of the taillight housings next.

89 240, 89 740, 90 740, in all of them, the button does not pop up in reverse.

Seems like it is desgined that way.

Well that really puts my mind at ease. Thanks! By the way, the back lights was the neutral safety switch, I took it apart and cleaned it up and the back up lights shine bright now!
