Pressurized Coolant Coming out of Overflow Tube 120-130

Hello All,

I just got my 240 rear end bolted up over the long weekend and needed to take my car into work after having it sit in the garage for the past 4 months while I finished the conversion. As my car was not tuned for the current weather (still not past 10 degrees C) I decided give the carbs a couple of flats and make sure the needle was centered.

So after fiddling around with the carbs for 10-15 minutes (right after a 10 minute drive from work) - I got the jet centered and the mixture set and then, just as I was about to shut it off, I get coolant steaming out of the overflow tube under pressure.

I shut it off and went for a read of my Haynes. According to them, this is an indication of a blown head gasket...Is there something else that would force steaming coolant out of the overflow tube? I wish I could tell you if it had overheated, but my temp gauge quit working some time ago. I've got an electric fan with a thermo switch mounted in the coolant distribution tube (on at 185 F off at 175 F) - it didn't come on.

Could this be just a stuck thermostat?

Craig

P.S. Good thing I've got a B20 on the bench in case the head gasket truly went.

    Craig;

    "Pressurized Coolant Coming out of Overflow Tube" could also be a symptom of simple overheating...the system does get put under (high) pressure if it boils anywhere... I suggest you get that temp gauge operational (or at least a functional replacement in there) and confirm the temperature and what's happening.

    Cheers

      OK Ron, I was going to get a temp gauge set at some point...I guess that point is now.

        Hello,

        Check your thermostat, they can stick closed, especially if the car is not run for a long time.

          I removed the thermostat, it looked clean...I heated it in water to a boil and it worked fine (opened at 180+ F). I think it may have been stuck closed as my e-fan didn't kick in. I reinstalled everything and took the car out for a drive, when the engine got up to temp, the fan kicked in, with no boiling over. Problem solved for now.

          Thanks,
          Craig

          Thanks Eric...I'll go pull it and put in in some hot water. There was no other signes of the HG blowing (white smoke etc).
