240 Disk Brake Rear End Installed. 120-130

As I was posing on my possible blown head gasket - I remembered that I hadn't posted the shots of the 240 rear end installed in the Canuck, so here it goes...

Back on the street for the first time since November! I wouldn't normally take that much time, but it was damn cold and there was a LOT of fabrication involved with my conversion.

I've kept the bolt spacing oringinal, which meant welding up the axles and a set of rotors and having them re-drilled to the right size. Then there was the whole ordeal of doing this conversion to a '66 with the odd torque rod instead of a '67 with a more conventional rear end set-up.

I've got with a black and blue theme for the rear with all the suspension bits being painted medium grey poly. I kept the limiting straps and yes, those are polished stainless button headed cap screws holding the diff with TrueTrac installed. The spedo is a little off given the gear ratio change from 4.11 to 3.73, but it isn't that bad. The TT is fun and the rear sway and Bilsteins make a world of difference in the handling.

I managed to keep the old style handbrake and adapted the 240 cables to work. Again, lots of fabricating to make all of this work, but it does work and looks stock - again, this is the theme of the Canuck.

Final shot. I used the rear section of the 240 drive line and connected it to the front section of the 122 drive line (same spline, just had to shorten the 240 section by 1") - works like a charm. I used the long bolts from the IPD reinforcement plates to hold up the extra parking brake cable. I've got a working parking brake for the first time in 3 years!!

Got the text of your post but not the pix -
Never had this problem before. Am I doing something wrong?

Comes right up for me, George.

Try emptying your cookies folder; that usually works for me when I'm having problems on the Brickboard.

Too Purty to leave Under the CAR!!! 120-130 1966

Tried again this morning with no changes and it came up fine this time.
Failed twice yesterday. Dunno what's different now.
Sure looks nice though - so nice that it should NOT be hidden under the car!

Good job! One day when I'm done with this blessed house, I hope to be doing stuff like that.

Did you consider keeping the bolt pattern in the back and eventually going to some/all 140 bits in the front?

Other than that, I've always wanted to put a rack in any of the non rack volvos :)

I thought about doing the front hub conversion (1800 stuff works, but is apparently made of gold for what people want for a set of spindles). There is plenty of room to clock the bolt pattern and go to 5 X 108mm. I wanted to keep the widened steelies that I've built, and I wasn't planning on going with the disc brake set-up when I built the wheels. Then I met Dale in Calgary (245gti) and he talked me into the conversion (I got him back by convincing him that he had to fix the body on his 122).

Here's what I would do if I was doing it again. Sell the widened steel wheels to one of you guys and drill the front hubs to match the bolt pattern of the rear. This would have saved me the trouble of welding up the axles and the rear rotors (I've got lots of practice welding cast iron) and the expense of having a machine shop re-drill the holes (they really didn't like going through the welded cast iron). I would have also started with a "67 style rear axle to get the suspension arms and brackets. My set up has 240 torque rods (the top ones) and custom made lower arms. It would have been much easier to start with the '67 set up.

The later setup is also better geometrically. The pinion angle is set by the position of the top rod...while in the '66 and earlier set up the pinion angle is set by the positioning of the large L bracket on the axle tube and the bushing thickness. I bought the lower arm rear bushings from IPD and they are too thick, wich causes my pinion to be a little more angled down than I would like (the bushings are a full 1/4" too thick) I'm sure it's only a degree or so, and so far it doesn't make any weird noises, but why put your drive line through anymore angle than it has to go through?

I feel like such a slacker.

    Good work, good workmanship.

Hey Shannon, when you're up in Calgary this summer (heard it through the rummor mill) we should have a mini-meet.

        Howdy Craig,

Will do. I must meet Dale to pickup parts. I plan to be there by Saturday late or Sunday early (June 7 or 8). I'll post more on my trip over in the Gatherings area in a few days.

How goes the WBO2? I've got mine built (14point7.com). It works, or at least it cals. I haven't installed it because I have an exhaust leak that I've got to resolve first. The leak is right where the manifold meets the downpipe. The downpipe is eroded around the "lip" that fits inside the manifold and doesn't seal. I am debating as to whether I should install the header I've got or install another single down pipe. The idea was to maximize the MPG with the current setup. But I think, since I have to work on it anyway, I'll go ahead and install the header.

Sounds good...I almost forgot about the wideband - it is sitting beside me all put together in a fancy case etc. Since I had the car off the road I haven't tried it out. I'll have to get out there this weekend and see how she goes. I'm a little affraid to see how rich it is.
