122 loose choke 120-130 1965

My choke lever/plunger/dashboard actuator(65 122, stock SU setup) will not stay pulled out. Although I like my collection of objects that keep the choke lever out when I warm the car up, I would like to get this tightened up. Can somebody tell me what needs to be tightened. There is a collar at the end of the choke cable housing that holds it in place at the carb, and I have tightened that, but that doesn't seem to be doing the trick. What am I missing? A picture/diagram sure would be nice.

Have you looked at the other ends of the choke cables, where they are clamped down against the choke assembly with the little metal piece? Are they securely clamped?, or are the ends of the cables slipping or pulled loose from the clamp entirely. If the cable ends (outer jacket) are unsecured and the the cables themselves seized or sticking, it could cause a problem like what you are describing.

That the choke pulls back in is actually the unusual condition...there is no provision for keeping it pulled out and the chokes engaged against the return springs at the carbs, other than the friction in the cables...so if the friction in these is so low that the return springs on the carbs are enough to overpower the friction, I suspect you have everything well lubed and there's nothing wrong with that! Generally the choke pulls back a bit but does stay engaged...and you really don't want (or need) it out fully for very long anyway...seconds are enough really...I wouldn't let it bother me really, but you could always but a quarter between the control and dash...and after ten seconds, a nickel...and after ten more seconds, a dime...

I keep spending the quarter, and then I have to hold it there. I am now using the cardboard tube that comes on a new spark plug. It stays there pretty well. Thanks for your reply.

Perhaps you can get up under the dash to the pivot mechanism and wrap something around the pivot point in between the washers. I'm thinking something like a strand of thin wire just to bind up the washers a little. In any event, pull the mechanism out from under the dash, clean it and check for smooth operation. Sometimes that does wonders!

Here is a photo of a 140 series pivot. I would guess that a 122 is similar.
