240 stereo 200 1987

Hi

I recently bought an OE Volvo stereo with amplifier from ebay. My problem is the code to be able to turn on the stereo. I am still getting in touch with the seller. Has anyone encountered this problem and how should I deal with it assuming that the access code is no longer available? I need your invaluable inputs.

This does not answer the question, but:
Volvo made great engines, but equally bad stereos IMHO. I've been driving bricks for 25+ years and went through stages of replacing w/ rebuilts or having OEMs repaired. Then saw the light--get inexpensive Sonys from Crutchfield with all harnesses, trim and support included-- and it's been smooth sailing ever since. This is even more true now with iPods.

Not every radio Volvo made was of shoddy quality.

The OEM units used in the early 240s are well made. Manufactured by Hitachi. The AM radios are nice and wide band, and the FMs sound decent as well.

For what it's worth, they are easy to hack and make mods to as well... Check out this thread about the AM Stereo conversion on my Volvo 8-track player:

I understand what you mean regarding the use of aftermarket stereo sytems. What I want to do is to restore the vehicle to its original condition, of course with the convenience of up to date OE parts and accessories.

I completely understand--I felt the same way first few times around on an '86 745 and '87 245. One was repaired at an electronics shop and one was a Volvo rebuilt swap through local dealer (Volvo used to take your old and give you identical rebuilt for $$). Finally, parts guy at dealer told me not to waste my money on the Volvo units--said they were, paraphrasing, "pieces of crap" with high failure rates. The dealer hated them since had to replace too often under (short) warranty, or if out of warranty deal with pissed off customers. The Crutchfield kits come with all adaptors and fit well. Take a look for your next time around.

If you know the VIN number of the car it came from (and can show a receipt), your local Volvo dealer can give you the code. If that is not possible, I think there is a way to add/remove diodes to the bottom of the circuit board... but I have not tried this myself.

Hi Jorrell

Thanks for the information. I will try to ask for the VIN and as a last resort, talk to someone regarding the diodes in the circuit board.

The serial number of the radio may be enough to get the code from a dealer.

Thanks. I will check with the dealer here in the Philippines and advise them of the serial number. I will also look-up and review the forum on brickboard regarding the 240 stereo.
