Long overdue ignition tuneup 700

I replaced what I believe to be the original spark plug wires (Volvo logo, made by Bremi, not Bougicord), distributor cap, and rotor today.

The old wires were really stiff and permanently bent into the shape they held for the last 22 years. I'm amazed that the car ran as well as it did.

The cap had a date stamp of 1985, and the rotor was frozen onto the distributor. I ended up destroying the rotor trying to remove it and had to pull the distributor off.

The car runs even better than I thought possible now. The idle is rock steady, it fires up instantaneously, and I could swear the car has more pep.

It's amazing what a simple tuneup can do. Considering the previous owner replaced practically everything under the hood, I wonder why the ignition system was neglected.

PS - what's with FCP Groton not including coil wires?

    Long overdue ignition tuneup 700

    I think it's wise to do a Tune-up every 20 years ; give or take a few years...NOT

Funny, I got up at 5:30 this morning and wires, Plugs rotor and Cap were done in 1/2 hour and it was $15 worth of parts. Why not do it once a year...before Breakfast even? Strange people out there.

Call Groton.. Not everything is on their site yet. They are still plugging away at putting their stock on the site. If you call, they will sell it to you and it sort of makes it a priority for them to get it up on the site.

That's what happened with me a few weeks back.

    Tim,

Isn't finding old parts fun? I just replaced my original Bogey wires, too, and I found some really severe vacuum leaks as I did it. And as for coil wires - my Bosch set from FCP had two, a long and a short. I can send you the short one, since I used the long one - as long as you think it'll fit. I can measure it for you.

Distributor cap and rotor are next on my list. They well may be original, too. I'll be interested to see how they affect things.

How's your flame trap and throttle body?

Ari (I am not rsjones! Even though the server thinks I am!)

I didn't have any vacuum leaks, but the hose to the flame trap literally crumbled when I went removed it. I went through the engine compartment and replaced most of the vacuum hoses.

The flame trap was plugged solid. It blew out the front seals and the oil cap gasket. I cleaned it and everything is fine now.

I haven't messed with the throttle body. It's probably all crusty and varnished but I'm putting it off until the summer because I don't have time to mess with it.

The car has been gone through and anything that could potentially fail has been replaced - timing belt, wheel bearings, relays, etc.

Ignition was the last part I needed to service.
