Broken oil trap nipple extraction - success 700 1990

Going over the the new-to-me 745 I discovered that the oil trap nipple was broken off in the rubber tube going to the oil pan. This was the source of a minor oil leak.

I ordered a new trap from FCP and I got it today. The trap comes with an o-ring, but it doesn't say that on the FCP site, so I ordered an extra one. Also, the new trap does not have the clipnut for the wiring harness clamp. The clipnut has to be transferred from the old trap.

I was a little nervous about this repair because I thought it might be a major pain to get the broken piece out. It turns out that with the right tool it's a snap.

The right tool in this case is a spring puller I bought at Harbor Freight for $2 or $3. I used it to hook the bottom of the broken piece and it pulled it right out.

In order to get to the oil trap I removed the throttle body and the idle air valve. While I had the IAV out, I rinsed it with Seafoam-type stuff and made all shiny. This is what my access to the trap looked like:

This is the new trap up close:

Maybe not a complete success ;-( 700 1990

I'm not sure exactly what you removed but I don't believe there is any separate "nipple" where the separator goes on. I think you may have pulled the broken top end of the drain hose (130696) that has a flared top end and runs down into the pan — to below normal oil level.

That hose is meant to be intact from top to bottom, so your PVC system may be compromised if that's no longer the case.

FYI, I got the picture below from FCP's site by searching on the Part Number above. Then I copied the image address (below) by right clicking on the image.

Then I added added the "img src=" as below (along with < and > at either end to make it work).

Nope. Not the hose. 700 1990

The hose you speak of is intact and sitting were it is supposed to be. The thing that I pulled out was the part of the oil trap that is inserted into it. It is not supposed to be a separate piece, but was. :P

The oil trap nipple broke off inside the hose. This hose is what I was pulling it out of.

I use that same spring puller for installing parking brake shoe springs-- works great!

Cheap, but effective 700 1990

I originally got this tool to do GM rear drum brakes. It also helped me with a Toyota timing belt tensioner.

It's amazing just how useful a little thing like that can be.
