Unusual sound 700 1992

I was driving home the other night and all of a sudden the car started making a high pitched rythmic whining sound and sounded as if it were coming from under the hood of the car while I was driving.

The sound was in a rythum like a car alarm going off and had the sound like an old VW horn trying to blow, but didnt have enough juice to make it really sound like a horn. A really loud buzzing kind of a noice in a rythum.

Car ran fine and all gauges said everything was fine and I finally made it home. Checked under the hood for the sound and it was not from under the hood.

Sounded like the main fuel pump. Turned the car off and started to check all of the usual things....

in-tank pump working
brand new fuel pressure reg
relay ok

So Im thinking main fuel pump and started to prep it for being replaced by hosing it down good with Blaster.

Came back out later to hose it down again and the noise has stopped.

Could this be the death warning that the main pump is going out?????

Thanks for the help

Could be the fuel pump, or it could be just about anything that rotates under the hood (A/C compressor or its clutch, PS pump, alternator, water pump. fan clutch, timing belt tensioner etc.) either due to a failing bearing or because something is making contact with the moving parts. (I recently saw a VW Golf with an incorrect (too long) plug wire that was dragging on the alternator pulley fan---it made a loud noise, that varied in pitch with engine speed) The best thing to do is if/when it happens again, pull over as soon as possible, and without shutting the engine off, open the hood and see if you can pinpoint where it is coming from. If it's the fuel pump, it should be obvious because of the location of the sound, and if it's that loud, you will soon need a new one.

    Hello,

Make sure to operate on the top half of the tank; this helps extend pump life.

Your steel fuel line may also be vibrating due to broken mounting straps; vibration will destroy the line's integrity.

The pump may also be overloading due to improper pressure regulation, or blocked lines or filters.

I suppose it is possible that the pump's useful life has ended. I'd hold on a little longer though before paying the big bucks for a new pump (although it's always nice to have one on hand).
