1st problem w 87 244: Hard start/cutout while cold, idles fine, stays on when hot. Suggestions? 200 1987

Howdy all,

OK: Have fluids and plugs changed on the newly acquired 87 244. Plugs were pretty foul, but don't know how long they've been in there. But when I picked her up last night was all I could do to give her enough gas to keep her going. Once warmed up, she drove the 66 miles home. Same this morning, trying to cut out, even when pumping or giving steady large amounts of gas. Kept her going though, and once hot she idles perfectly and stays on.

Have no repair records on this one, so where would y'all start looking. AMM, throttle body, ...?

Again, don't know what I'd do without you all. Going to tackle flame trap and breather box tomorrow.

Thanks so much,
Hannah C.

I did reply to your post on the flame trap. Afterward I thought I'd suggest that you check for vacuum leaks . Spray water or carb cleaner around the intake manifold and throttle body and see if the idle speed changes. Also look at all of the vacuum hose for cracks where they connect at each end.

1st problem w 87 244: Hard start/cutout while cold, idles fine, stays on when hot. Suggestions? 200 1987

My 1984 244 does the EXACT same thing. Im slowly hunting it down. New FPR is going on when I finally get a wrench big enough for the nut holding it to the bracket. (22mm or so Im told). Its too dangerous to drive around my area with the car barely moving when cold so I have to let the barge have her 10+ minute warm up every night before the commute. Im also interested in where this check valve is...

    Hi,

The air meter and flame trap likely have little to do with your problem.

If you want my opinion, you really should check the car for ANY fuel leak. Pull the trunk carpet and remove the access panel. Directly observe the connections below the access panel. Lift the vehicle and with a lamp visually inspect the fuel pump/filter area and steel lines after a long idle. Any fuel leak must be corrected.

Next, pull the vacuum hose off of the fuel pressure regulator and check for fuel leakage.

There is no other remedy but to replace the fuel pump check valve, fuel pressure regulator, and the fuel injectors in that order.

You can verify my hypothesizes by spraying starting fluid into the intake before a cold start. If the situation is eliminated, then the problem is fuel related.

1st problem w 87 244: Hard start/cutout while cold, idles fine, stays on when hot. Suggestions? 200 1987

Have searched thoroughly today along all lines for a potential leak. Found nothing. FPR looks suspiciously new compared with other components under hood.

To double check you recommended spraying starter fluid into intake: Haven't done this on a non-carburetter car, do I spray it in the duct after the AMM or elsewhere.

Also, where is the fuel pump check valve located if starter fluid makes the cold start work and I start to replace pieces?

Thanks, and sorry for the novice questions.

P.S. Once warm, no hesitation or stalling at speeds or stop lights. Totally normal if I can keep her going for the first 5 - 8 minutes.

My 87 did the same thing, I went thru and loosened up the hoses from the mm to the intake. I also went thru and checked the fuel lines. I thought I would have to replace the fp. I ended putting a spare IOC, after the car starts it should idle high, after it warms up the idle controller adjusts. try that part, do a search and you can find a few threads on how to rebuild them.
