Auto xmission upshift question 700

Hey all.

You may remember I had my sons' car here, down for a month trying to figure out an unrelated problem. Fixed that one up and now we're seeing another. Figures, huh?

Anyway, here's our latest...

While driving normally (unspirited) the darned transmission doesn't want to upshift unless I completely back off the gas pedal.

A little history: I had the local transmission shop replace the rear main seal which had blown out due to a (now-cleared) plugged PVC system, and while they were in there already I had them flush the torque converter, transmission and clean the filter.

Which leads me to my question. What is it that directly controls the upshift? Is it engine vacuum? Electronic? Or is it something else?

No matter how gently I ease into the throttle, the darned tranny just won't upshift until I'm either taching out or as I'd said, back completely off the throttle.

Help! :)

Sometimes changing the fluid in a very old tranny causes problems.

      Great links, thanks guys.

Don't know how I overlooked that entire section on transmissions in the FAQ.

Perhaps just not as user-friendly as I'm accustomed to, which'll take more practice I guess!

I'll look into the cable adjustment when I get home tonight.

      Thanks again.
