to start a "What cured What' list?

I suggest to start a list of "what cured what", if there isn't already one. This will be beneficial to all of us especially us relatively new members. It could cover all red-block engine related issues (240, 740, 940).

A Volvo believer:
1) The new Bosch coil cured my poor acceleration.
2) Changing from my #561 computer to a used #951 computer solved my poor hot start since the 951 pre-primes the fuel line when you turn the key to "on."
3) The new catalytic converter was the only new part that finally made it pass emission testing.

Erwin:
4) Replacing RSR cured my intermittent non-start and mysterious 232 code
5) Broken shot thermostat overheated my engine. Solution: coolant level alarm.

    PROBLEM
A problem started, as I ran low of gas one evening. I stopped at a station, put some fuel in, and while on the freeway the engine completely shut off. I coasted to a stop, and it wouldn't turn over, as if it was out of fuel.
Long story short, I got it home and checked the fuel pump amperage, spark ignition and finally the fuel pump relay. I switched a "good" relay I had with the old one, and suddenly it worked! So, I thought, "well it's just the relay," and replaced it. Strangely enough the cruise control that was mysteriously broken, worked again.
Anyways, I thought it was fixed, when the exact same thing happened again. The engine shut off, and it wouldn't start again. After waiting and trying, it somehow turned over, and I drove it home.
Now the strange thing is that recently while on the way to a parts store, (yes, I was still driving it)I noticed the rear defroster turned on,(even though I didn't turn it on) and the right directional was also "stuck" on, not even pulsating. The rear brake light bulb-warning light on the dash panel, also started showing. I pulled over to re-set the system, by turning the ignition off and on again. The dash panel, directional and rear defroster stayed on, even with the key off.
Well, I drove home and shut it off, and after a few seconds, everything finally shut down like it should.
So, what is it now? The ignition, or a wiring harness? After all the electrical malfunctions, I kind of ruled out the fuel pump as a problem, but what might it be? Any help would be appreciated.

    RESOLUTION
Turns out there was a melted mass of wires under the driver's side floor board. A shorted wire going to the license plate light, was burning everything up and fusing itself to the sheet metal up by the left rear tire well.
Those mysterious conditions were brought on by surges and shorts. No ECU, no ignition, but a pain in the neck. So, I think I got lucky depending on how you look at it.

Symptoms changed with everything that was tried. It might be instructional to read the entire thread:

    Howdy eyyu,

Yes, a list of "this fixed that" would be a wonderful thing to have. So too would be a list of "How do I?", "Where is?", PNs, wiring diagrams, tools, shops, and helpful advice. Oh. Wait-a-minute... We have that, the Brickboard.

A single thread with all the "fixes" is almost impossible to do on the Brickboard. The nature of the board is to push unused threads toward the back. If the "fixes" thread is not updated for a couple of months, new users would not find it without a specific search for "this thing" and "that fix".

What we really need is a mind reading search function. ;-)

Mr. Shannon, Thanks for your thoughtful reply. YES, there are quite a few good ways to collect solutions to each posted problems as you listed. And I do understand that if a thread is not updated recently, it will be pushed to the back. Maybe, Mr. administrator (who are they?) can chime in and let us know if we can have a few (just a good few) information collecting threads always stay upfront.

      Here is a few suggestions:
      1. What cured what
      2. PNs (I compiled PNs for my 91 745T and 93 245)
      3. what else?

At the end of the day, I might just realized that I'm being too silly. But that's OK.
