AW70 questions (SpazMan) 700 1987

Hi folks,

I notice a rubbing, wooshing sound emit from my tranny ~3 seconds before it shifts under moderate load. The noise only lasts 3/4 of a second or so, but is noticeable with the windows down ("vroooommmmSCREE-EECHmmmmmmmmmmshift"). I don't know enough about automatic transmissions to understand what could be going on... why would a clutch pack move that long before a shift?

Coincidentally, my folks' Honda Accord's transmission does this also, but only occasionally. It's FWD, but the EXACT same sound.

What do you think?

Thanks,

Ari

Might be slipping between shifts, during shift I mean.
Mine does when low on fluid, I have a slow leak so I get it often.

Hmmm, interesting. Well, I have a tranny flush scheduled for both the 740 and the Honda, so... we'll see if that makes any diff (haven't checked the Honda's fluid in ages). Funny thing is, on the Volvo, I think the fluid is overfilled - if I'm reading the dipstick right (fluid is about an inch higher than 'max'). Does that cause slipping also?

      Thanks!

I was told excess fluid can cause trouble, foaming and all that stuff.

I think it could be related to slipping problem I have at highway speed - seems the governor gets confused about fluid pressure. If this doesn't fix it, I'm going to do the tailshaft bushing.

          Thanks!

          Ari
