Magnefine filter for power steering 200

I purchased a 3/8 Magnefine filter and was wondering on the correct location to install it. I'm guessing the top line is the return line. Also wondering if the return line can be disconnected to flush the fluid similiar to flushing an AW70/71. Pictures would be great.

Update and thanks for the responses 200

    Thanks for all the responses.

I did the flush and added the Magnefine filter today. I used a razor blade to remove the line at the reservior so as not to brake the nipple, removed it from the bracket and then dumped out all the fluid. I used a small scrap piece of hose and vise gripes to plug the return inlet then put the return line into a clear hose for draining. To flush I ran 2 quarts of cheap ATF through. Here is my blunder. I read somewhere that the capacity was 1.4 quarts and I actually think it is .8 quarts. Based this I ended up flushing most of a full quart of Mobil 1 ATF to the drain pan. Had to go back to Walmart for another quart. I did introduce some air in the system that will have to work out.

    Hi Al,

Be careful removing that top return line from the reservoir. Years ago, when I first got started with a 90 240, I was in second heaven having great luck flushing the tranny, so, with my new found knowledge, I went for the power steering assembly and tried to remove the return line, only to break the plastic barbed outlet. Since you're proposing to install the filter, I'd say cut the line at a convenient location for the filter install, and flush from there.

I've since gone with the turkey baster method, however.

    Have a good one,

    Marty

    Hello AL
i cut the top line, extend the hose into a container and start the car, like a tranny flush.
be careful as it will empty the resivoir in about 5 seconds.
this way you can repeat and get a full flush.
probably better to have a second hand to help go smoother.
    good luck
    mike

yes, top line is the return. you can't drain all the fluid in the reservior by removing the return line since it sits high. a turkey baster does better than that.

it's best to cut the line rather than trying to disconnect it, as the plastic might be fragile after so many years.
