No Brake Lights -- Problem Solved 900

It always good to report back on solved problems, so here’s a brake light problem now solved.

On this new-to-me 1994 wagon, nice 945, 135k miles, the brake lights did not work. After a few hours of chasing down the problem, it turned out to be a bad bulb failure sensor relay. Testing found 12 volts to the switch at the brake pedal, and the brake pedal switch showed continuity when activated. The circuit then heads to the bulb failure relay, that red round relay in the back of the relay panel. I had already tested the bulbs and grounds in the rear brake lights, and they were OK. Thanks to a search of BRICKBOARD messages, many suggestions pointed toward a bad bulb failure relay. I pulled the red round relay and found terminals 54, 54L and 54R (basically power in at 54, and power out at 54 left, 54 right). I wound a small piece of copper wire around those terminals, snugged up tight to the relay’s base. That bypassed the problematic relay, feeding 12 volts from the brake switch to the brake lamps in the tail lights. Upon plugging the relay back in, the brake lights worked. Problem solved. I’ll head to the boneyard and get a used relay for a more permanent fix. This fix would probably work for any of the bulb failure relay circuits (turn signals, headlights, tail lights), once you figure out the numbers at the base of the terminal and can bypass that circuit (power in, power out) with fine wire connecting the related terminals. Long live the Brickboard.

No Brake Lights -- Problem Solved 900

When these relays fail, it always seems to be in the Brake Light area.

Same relay for the 200's, 700's and 900's.

If you Searched further, you can open these Cans up and resolder them. You wont be able to do this resoldering if you only own one of the Gun style soldering Irons, You need one with a smaller tip.

Thanks for reporting back
