Blower Motor, Heater / AC - How much trouble? 200

I've got to replace it. It squilled like a pig for months before it died. I know it's behind the dash somewhere and heard it's a chore to replace. I see some used ones the internet for between $188.00 to $75.00. I plan on getting a service book on "how to" but any experienced advice on the surgery is appreciated.

The guy's on NPR's Car Talk said they'd rather replace a transmission than a 240's blower motor. I tried to chicken out and get my Volvo Place to finish the job. They told me "Gee, you're 95% of the way there." At first, I thought they had more confidence in my ability than I did. I've since decided they just didn't want the hassle.

Anyway, I'm glad I did it- it makes me feel like a real brick owner. As someone else said, label everything, take many photos, and take it slow. I keep looking for a Swedish swear word dictionary for times when I'm working on the brick, but no luck yet.

    Have fun and good luck!

New ones are $50 something from FCP Groton for a Unimotor brand. Don't buy an MTC resistor, I found it to be complete garbage as well as the aftermarket fan switch (although they probably would work for who knows how long). The resistor is as hard to get to as the motor, so you be the judge on what to do there. It took me three evenings of free time to replace mine, just requires lots of patience. The Unimotor will need to have the wires lengthened, they are too short by several inches. I just cut the wires from the old motor and soldered them onto the new motor (that way you get to retain the Volvo connector too).

Below is a link to the 'easier method' for doing the blower motor, I will be trying this after the front end rebuild this weekend. Look it over and see if this makes sense for you for time savings. Regards, Greg

Hey Tim, Basically once upon a time Volvo decided to build a blower motor and then decided to build a car around it and called it a 240. It is quite a chore. You have to pull most everything apart in the center dash area. Sometimes you have to modify the housing by removing the motor mount raised areas or "bumps" as they're called. This is all inside the squirrel cage. You'll know what I'm talking about when you get into it. Plan on an all afternoon job if you've never done one before. Hey, I see you're from Colorado. I'm on the western slope in the Grand Junction area. Where are you at? Good Luck, Charles

Thanks for the info. I'll give it a try myself. If the difficulity level is beyond me I'll go to plan B (the shop). I live in the Evergreen - Conifer area west of Denver.

      Thanks again.

I tackled that job on my 84 245. Lots of brakets and connectors to take apart on both sides of the console. Take pics as you go to remember how it all comes apart. There are some clips on the blower housing that are kinda fragile, you have to pry them gently apart. I broke a couple and it still worked out OK. Took me about all day to complete. It can be a pain but it is doable.

Thanks for you're input. I'm going to give it a try. I figure getting one out from the pick & pull yard will prepare me somewhat. Did you buy new or used?

        Thanks

Haven't been on for a couple days. I bought new from IPD or Volvoworld, i think.
I didn't want to go to all that work for an unknown quality part.....

If you go with a Siemens motor and you should be just fine.

Installed mine also tossing in the Dave Shannon dash removal to make things easier to reach and the yard sale.

Took 10 sweat filled hours and one panic trip to the PUP before they closed to replace a bent vane clip.

Has been working like a champ as quietly as that current sucking motor can for a couple of years now.

Label, mark, take pictures, and read up. Test it before you close it up.

You should be good to go.

            Regards,

            Paul
