I over-torqued ball joint bolts by mistake. What next? 900 1993

I was replacing the ball joints on my wife's 945 yesterday and on the right side when I installed the new one I mistakenly torqued the two bolts that hold the ball joint to the strut tube to 44 ft*lb in stage 1, then did stage 2 as prescribed 90 degrees past that. I confused the torque setting with the ball joint shaft to control arm setting :(

So, my question is what should I do?

1. Replace the bolts (if so, what spcs are they? Grade 8 or what?)?

2. Re-torque them to the correct setting (probably not, since they are not supposed to be reused)?

3. Leave them alone (is there a risk of latent failure?)?

Thanks!

From memory....the bolts are not hardened..something like a grade 5 (SAE).

The only way that you're going to rest well is to replace the bolts with new ones.....Factory spec.

If you've really over stressed them, I wouldn't trust them.
There's too much riding on it.

    Just my opinion

Thank you, Steve. The bolts are grade 8 (or metric equivalent thereof, have 10.9 stamped on the head of the bolt). Does this mean they can take more or less over-torquing than say, grade 5? I already ordered new bolts from Fatenall (they had none on hand), but they won't be here till Monday. In the meantime I plan to drive the car but in a limited fashion (only when absolutely necessary). They are easy enough to replace and are cheap enough, so there is no reason to even think about it. Only thing is, the over-torqued ones need to last a few more days (I am sure they will). I think over-torquing probably weakens them, but they should hold for a few days, at least, methinks.

      Thanks!

Grade eights are stronger than fives.I also agree with replacement.
