Hmmm... did I do that? [smoke] 700 1987

Hi folks,

Finally got my dizzy rotor off! Gaah, I thought I was gonna break my arm!

After I got the new cap on too, I put the wires back and put the battery cable back on, and started the car. Out of the corner of my eye, out the passenger window, I saw a puff of smoke pass by.

I jumped out of the car, but there was no more smoke coming out of the tailpipe. The exhaust smelled gassy for a moment, then just smelled normal.

What do you think? I figure that the more powerful spark burned out some funky gunk that might have been in the engine. The old original cap and rotor were scored and burnt.

Thanks!

Ari

If you didn't do anything other than the cap and rotor at this time, it's unlikely they were responsible for the smoke. Was the engine cold when you started it? If so, it is likely that the smoke has always been there on cold starts (probably due to hardened 21 year old valve guide seals) and you just haven't noticed it before.

Unless your plugs were really old and fouled, it's unlikely that the hotter spark would have burned enough gunk off of them to be noticeable coming out the exhaust. Where you WILL notice the hotter spark is in easier starting, smoother idle and acceleration, and better gas mileage.
