Sons '90 240 wagon is leaking water into the car, most likely from the windshield on the drivers side. The PO had put some kind of "goop" under the trim near the top of the windshield on the drivers side.

The windshield is in great shape and we would like to save it. My question is can we remove the old trim, remove the glass and replace the trim with the newer style that glues in? I'm assuming that there is no difference in the size of the windshield between the old trim versus the new trim.

I think we can get some butyl and do the job ourselves. Anybody done this?

Replacement can be done. Pinchweld is the same between your model year and '91-'93. Had glass shop install a '91-'93 windshield to replace a Safelite on my '83. Would not go the Safelite route again, troubled by leaks. Suggest you read brickboard archives on how to DIY. New glass will come with the trim already attached, and you won't need the windshield clip kit. Glass shop loved the ease of installation, just glue in. Other benefits of the new glass is Scanex feature, filters UV rays making it easier on your eyes.

I urge you to go to a professional. It is a developed skill and a good shop will have guys who replace windshields all the time. They may also let you take the car away for a few days, fix rust holes, and then replace the glass.

I just had my 89 240 window (with the bulky chrome trim) replaced with the newer glue style and it works fine. The new rubber trim BARELY fits around the frame of the car and I was told it's only for preventing wind noise. They said it was a little tricky to get it aligned perfectly- but they did and it looks great.

I told them I had an 89 but to order a 91 glass. They had no problem with that.
I just had to pay $100 deductible for my insurance and file a "no fault" claim.
