As BULLETPROOF mentioned, I believe the Case Size of teh battery ( so it hooks into the Tray correctly is a Group 24 or B24 style

Group 24 superseded group 46 that was original to your car. They are available.
The dimensions are, roughly, 10 1/4" x 6 3/4" x 9". The positive terminal is outboard and the negative inboard.

2 1/2 years ago I purchased this size battery for the '80 242 (which takes the same battery as your '79 GT) from NAPA. It was the right fit, had the terminals properly oriented and had the "toe" for the hold down.

Call around. Sellers who are knowledgable will be able to furnish you with the correct battery.

I wouldn't put a Group 24 in. It's a taller battery used in larger Nissans and Hondas, mostly.

I believe I have a Group 91 in mine. Most places who know what they are talking about will either have the right one or one that is very similar to keep from having to stock a ton of various specific batteries. If you really want the factory spec (I don't remember what it is) a store like Batteries Plus can order it for you.

One of my dimensions was a little off. Height is more like 8". This is after actually measuring the battery in my 242.
At any rate, it is clearly labeled BCI #24. It is the correct size for the '79 GT as well as other early models.

Wal-Mart type 48-3 will do the job.

I have that battery in my 1986 244, my 1988 244, and my 1997 965.

It has 875 cranking amps, and 700 cold cranking amps.

The dimensions are correct.

The "feet" around the sides at the bottom fit the hold-down system of each of my cars, and each one is different.

The terminals are in the correct place, positive next to the fender for the 240s.

The price was lower by far than other sources such as NAPA, NTB, AutoZone and Advance Auto Parts.

It is made by Johnson Controls, who, I understand, makes almost all brands.

Good Luck,

Bob

Hi.

put a big fat one.

With a little work, you can fit a 100 amp alternator as found in late model 700/900's. Mine really charges compared to the old one.

Good Luck!!
