Themostat housing removal - gasket leaking S90-V90

Hello. Can anyone give me some advice on the best (easiest) way to remove the thermostat housing to change the gasket where the housing interfaces with the engine on a V90 or 960? Also, does anyone know if a silicone gasket compound can be used there instead of a paper gasket?

Thanks,
Steve

I changed that housing once because the owner had attempted to remove the two thermostat screws with a hammer and broken it.I removed the top 2 screws with a good torx socket, then twisted the adaptor fore and aft to help break the bottom screw loose.I then bent a L-shaped torx key short enough to fit in there.I used a heating torch to fashion the tool.Luck was with me,and the screw came out.I used a green Volvo gasket.

There's no paper gasket. It's a slotted rubber O-ring type gasket that slips over 'flange' of the thermostat. Use a good quality Torx bit of the proper size and apply allot of downward pressure as your rotate it to break it loose. Only 2 bolts hold it in.

You can use a turkey baster to empty the contents of the overflow tank, the level in the radiator only needs to be low enough to be below the thermostat level. (that's about 2 qts.). After replacing the theromstat & gasket your can just pour it back in to the overflow tank. You shouldn't loose a drop.

Thanks Dewfpo, I was referring to the other end of the thermostat housing, where it is bolted to the cylinder head. I can see a green gasket sticking out around the flange. It also uses torx bolts, but they are almost impossible to access, even with the alternator and power steering pum removed.

I sent you a reply on the "900" section.

I seem to recall that there is only one lower bolt. It is not not 'impossible', just not as easy as we would like to see.
