Power steering rack failure modes 200 1992

Okay, I've experienced a few rack failures in 240s, ie, the leaking seals on the output shafts, the return lines popping off at the passenger side seal, and the input shaft seal leak.... But now I am stumped, I've got an issue where the rebuilt rack is sloppy, ie. the input shaft moves and it takes a bunch of movement before the output shafts move. This of course results in a very sloppy steering feel and on a crested road, I find myself having to saw the steering wheel back and forth rapidly to maintain a straight line. I have verified that that the rack has significant input to output "slop", the ball joints, tie rods, bushings, rubber strut mounts, and so on, are perfect.

This "slop" showed up very suddenly after bashing through a set of pot holes under heavy breaking (dry road and a few ABS pulses), so I am wondering if this may have been the culprit. Even the U-bolt mounts to the cross member are tight and the cross member to frame rail bolts are properly torqued with no evidence of slippage.

Final question, is this a known or "common" failure mode for the PS rack? If yes, is there an adjustment, or is it time for another rack? For those of you who know Mercedes steering from the late 80s, it feels like a fragged steering gear box.

Thanks folks... I think Raleigh is shaking this pup apart!

LOTS of crow to eat on this one! 200 1992

When I did the final inspection before removing the old steering rack tonight, I removed the belly pan, climbed underneath and had the wife saw on the steering wheel for me. Er, um, well, I found the problem was that the U-bolts that hold the rack to the cross member were loose... VERY LOOSE! The rack was moving nearly 1/4 of an inch side to side, ergo steering slop. I tightened up the 13mm headed nuts on the U-bolts after centering the rack and all slop disappeared!

I hope my new-found shame will prevent someone else from buying a rebuilt rack they didn't need in the first place! I have to assume that the new U-bolts that come with a rebuilt rack give over time and loosen up a bit, so perhaps following a rack replacement rechecking the nut torque a few months later might be a really good idea! Yes, the rack itself is fine.

As far as I know, there are NO adjustments for endplay or preload available on the ZF racks. The Cam racks could be adjusted including a balancing adjustment for evening the force required in either directions, but not for the ZF. What a shame. Remember when steering gearboxes had those little screw and locknut affairs on top? That was easy....and some years ago!

      DS,

I remember those days of the Benz gear box... steering gets a bit sloppy, loosen the lock nut and run the screw in half a turn and the problem went away. Aaah, those were the days!

The '92 245 I used to own had the exact symptoms you are describing, which were cured completely with the replacement of the lower steering u-joint. The difference was truly night and day once it was replaced. As you mention, it was particularly hair-raising to drive on our crested highways, some of which were undergoing resurfacing at the time. It felt like bad struts and bad tie rod ends at the same time.

    Good luck!

      Herb,

I have checked the steering column U-joints, and unfortunately, they are as good as new, I checked them to 50 foot pounds, ie. zero slop. I can actually see the input shaft moving where it enters into the rack and see the output shafts not moving for quite some time.

To me, this is sounding like its time for a new rack, but if there is an adjustment that can be made to it, I'd rather try that first!
