Shopping for a 164 ... What to look for? 140-160 1971

Hi All,

I've come across a 164 for sale that was driven by the original owner, a little old lady of course. Anyways, I was wondering if there is anything I should be paying close attention to when looking at the car. It's a '71 164 with the straight 6 and a 4 speed with elec. overdrive. I'm very familiar with 122 stuff, and The drive train isn't that much different, so hopefully there aren't too many things on the car that will be surprises.

Thanks for your help.

Jelous. If it is not rusted out, I'll buy it! Seriously, the only major probles are rust and the ends of the wiring harnesses. The inch or so that stick out of the harness and the connectors tend to get brittle and need replacing.
If it is carbed, check the oil levels in the each carb. A good cleaning would help a lot.
If it is FI, the IAC will need cleaning.

Change the tranny oil and rear diff junk. It should have a limited slip, so spend an extra buck to get good diff oil.

Have fun with yur new toy, and watch out for the RCMPs :)

The rust is supposed to be minimal and it is a dual stomberg car. Do stombergs need to be adjusted for winter temperatures? I'm not really familiar with them. SU's, sure.

with both SUs and Strombergs... if they are set up right, neither should need adjustment for winter. Strombergs are admittedly a bit better in that regard in my opinion.

Due to problems with my 240 this past winter, I drove my '71 164 all winter. It's got strombergs. It started and ran fine in temperatures down to -20°F.

That's not to say they will all be that good, but if set up properly.. and all other things right with the world... it should be fine.

That sounds awesome! About the only real problem with them is injection woes. It's only the moving parts that give grief with D-Jet.

Sounds like a potentially really nice find...

Really no unique issues with 164s that wouldn't apply to a 122 or 140... rust, miles, and overall condition. I suppose if you find it to have a quiet transmission, that'd be really super nice, but don't count on it.

'71 will probably have strombergs... less than ideal in my opinion, but if it runs well, that's fine.

One thing you'll probably notice that's rather neat about 164s.... when you step on the gas pedal, the car goes really fast. Fun :-)
