Grey goop 120-130

I am putting the chrome back on my freshly painted 122 wagon. When I removed the chrome, there was a grey caulk on the tabs. Can anyone suggest a product to replace this. Something from Advance or Autozone stores, or a hardware store?

By the way, I will be posting pictures soon...but I am sure I will be asking more questions before that happens.

Off to the garage...

I think the stuff is called butyl putty. It is like plumbers putty. Comes in a roll about an inch wide. The stuff is put all over the car, to seal up any potential water ingress gaps.

IPD sells it, but your local Recreational Vehicle supply shops should have it. It is used alot on RV trailers to seal joints around windows, ducts, etc.

You can go to a real parts store, and ask them for some body caulk. It comes in a box about 12" long and 6" wide, and maybe one inch thick. There is paper seperating the layers, and you just peel the caulk strips out and use them. If you need a longer piece, just put two ends together like modelling clay. It's really some pretty neat stuff. You probably won't find any at the blister pack stores that you mentioned.

Try the hardware store. 120-130

I found a roll at the habitat for humanity store, but I think they use the same stuff in HVAC or something similar. I think you can find it at hardware store in the section where they sell winter window sealing material.

On my 245, I had problems with the end around on the bumper coming loose. I was told to use silicone at the tabs where the part attached.
I used a trim adhesive I found at Advance ..Pitcrews Choice by Permatex. Everything is staying put very well.

IPD sells it in a roll about 6 feet x 1/2 inch x 1/8 inch thick. Good for cushioning the gas tank, behind the bottom edge of rear reflectors, and the chrome screen between the hood and the windshield.

Good Luck.

Old Skool name Dum-Dum, at least in the UK. The factory used it to seal up the where the side strip clips come through the body/doors, keeps the water out. Some of these clips not easy to get to. The regular rusty spot at the top of the 2 door rear wheel arch caused by water leaking through the clip/hole right above or even the roof to wing horizontal trim above that. One of those that's hard to get to. The next one forward worse but not so bad if you have all the trim out. Also found sealing the heater valve and various holes in the bulkhead. Useful stuff but I bet a good silicone caulk or seam sealer will get used now days.

I use dum dum all the time, everywhere. Even sealed my windshield with it. It remains to be seen how many UV intensive summers it will survive.

Cheers,
