Speedometer Failure 200 1992

I removed the instrument cluster while working on my car and when I went to put it back in I hooked up all the wires including the red and white wire to the double spade connector. I've since learned that this is a horrible thing to do and the red and white wire does not get connected to anything.

My speedometer and odometer no longer work.

In an attempt to remedy this situation I have swapped in another complete cluster of the closest year I could find (1989). I have swapped speedometers. I have tested the wire and the sensor, which passed. I'm pretty much stuck on what else I can do.

Any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Indeed the 92-93 ABS cars use a completely different cluster, not just the speedo head. The speedo head connects to the back board with four upper contacts, not just three as in the '89 unit you have, the fourth having some relation to the ABS unit for speed differential monitoring I'd guess. You must find a 40168 unit for a sedan or the equivalent wagon ABS cluster to do the swap (can't recall the ABS wagon speedo number at the moment).

The red white wire is 12 volts right from the ignition. As soon as the car starts, you fry the board on the side of the speedo head. That wire is the tach lead. I've gotten to the point where I ship clusters with a big tag taped to the top that says "Do Not Attach Red White Wire!" On earlier cars, I've seen them actually run for a little while like this, but the later ones seem to die almost instantly.

Well I've looked through all the junk yards local to me and have been unable to find anything from 92 or 93. Do I need to replace the entire cluster or do I just need to replace the speedometer?

Any ideas of how I can go about fixing this?

240's with ABS use a different system to power the speedometer, tied into the ABS control.Check your printed circuit board carefully, with a magnifying glass, for blown solder joints or burned connections.

The good book Bentley says the sending unit changed in 1992. Bet you that 89 is not the same as the one in your 92. You most likely need to find a 92 or 93 to get the right part.

Thanks and Regards,

Paul
