Of my family's 7 volvos, 3 are mine: '82 244GL 4 spd w/OD, no name yet.
My '88 245 is "Sis"and my '88 244GL is named "My girl" for the one time I got jammed trying to merge onto the highway and I had to kick-down the auto tranny and she got me out of that jam. I then rubbed her dash and said "That's my girl!"

My family just calls them the: blue, grey, black, black turbo, wagon, turbo wagon and the white car.

1985 240 Wagon = Bessie (may have something to do with Blue Bell ice cream)
1996 Subaru Outback = Smokey (persistent oil leak that drips on the cat. converter)

Former Cars:
1991 Alfa Spider = Sphincter (odd play on the word 'Spider')
1988 Mazda 626 = The White Tiger or Maytag (painted refrigerator white)
1987 Audi Coupe GT = The Chrysler (no particular reason)

I kind of stole the name for my '90 244 from Erling Brox (check out his website)

http://home.no.net/ebrox/

we call it "The Hat" ours is silver (paint code 130) and looks like the kind of car a man wearing a hat might drive.

A guy down the road from me gave me an old 83 244T....his wife said its name was "Omar". My last white 244 was named Snowball (a large part due to everything about it seemed to snowball).

We had a brownish-red 242 named Shasta (root beer). Currently we have a blue 245 we haven't named yet. It had a blue toy dolphin hanging from the rear view mirror, so maybe that's its moniker. I would think it'd have pedigree papers stating such things.

Naming any Volvo seems to be a law in some areas :)

When I purchased my daughters '89 years ago there were many things to fix so it was christened "the Murphy". When I bought my 90' black sedan last year my brother dubbed it "the Limo".

Dad's '91 245: "Puff"...the Magic Wagon.

My old '82 244: "Rusty" for very obvious reasons.

My '93 black sedan: No clue. I've tried to name it several times, it just won't pick up a nickname.

'93 244: 'A' cam 4 deg. advanced, 25/22 sways, custom heim endlinks, fully converted to poly bushings, HD springs front, wagon springs rear.

I've always felt wrong naming a volvo with a female name, with the male symbol as the grill emblem I just can't. My old 245 started out as Betsy and I renamed him Bob. I tend to name them after the old owners, but only if I like them. I've had a Craig and a Doug, my newer 67 isn't named yet with his old owner having a unisex name. Once he's painted I'll give him a name of some sort.

Now departed 1979 Olds Delta 88 was called Elizabeth.

The 1993 940 is named Junker. I had put in new shocks, bushings and ball joints. Formally owned by a careless co-ed, not a single body panel is without a dent. It is the go to car, the best riding car, the park it anywhere car and the AC works well. (All cars are parked in "no ding zones, up hill".)

My work horse, my baby, a white 940 wagon is named My Baby. Warning, to all y’all, don’t mess with my baby.

The wife’s gray 940 is called Gray Car.

Red 1994 240 sedan is named Red Car.

That’s enough of this.

Tom

Maybe I have no imagination, but The Volvo seems to be plenty, as it covers everything that the car is: it is tough, it is reliable, it looks like it will simply never stop, and it's ours. The Volvo says it all...

My 1988 245 is named "Betsy".
I bought Betsy from an 83 year old lady who just moved into a nursing home.
Betsy was parked in back of the nursing home and when we picked her up (the car)we asked the owner what the cars name was. She told us "Betsy" and we kept the name.

I've named all of my cars except my first car, although I considered posthumously naming it (well, it didn't die...just traded in). My vehicles in order of aquisition:

1987 Honda Accord: (unnamed) (m, traded)
1987 Nissan Truck: Rusty - named for personality, not body rot (m, still have)
1989 Honda Accord: Alexi - My dear friend (m, still have)
1995 Honda Accord: Angela - No nonsense, no personality (f, sold)
1992 BMW 318is: Wolfgang - Did I mention how much Bosch makes me want to scream
sometimes? (m, sold)
2001 Acura CL-S: Justin - It just seems like it'd be a frat boy if it were human
(m, current daily driver)
1983 Volvo 245DL: Jan - As in Jan Van Eyck, not Jan Brady. Again...Bosch. (m,
still have)

My mother has a Civic named Cynthia, (f, obviously) but her naming was a direct result of me naming my car. Dad won't name his, but I call it St. James (m).

If it's a sickness, then I guess I shall continue my illness.

Wes

Oh yeah! The subject of reams of light-hearted e-mail, good natured chiding, comments about psychological well being etc. My family has been naming cars since before I was born and the tradition continues. The current flock of Volvos: Olaf, Ilse, Alva, Annika. Not to mention the collection of Datsuns: Elroy, Eliza, Chester, Abigail and Zero. Opinions I've received vary from "Don't be silly, of course you have to name them." to "You are seriously sick."

How about DEAD if SHE doesn't start getting better gas mileage. Just kidding,It's Her.Why do we tend to call our cars female?

REPLY TO THIS MESSAGE    PRINT   SAVE

naming your 240? 200

Why do we call them female? Not sure but there are several males out there also. I have seen Volvos named Astro and other male names. One guy on here has six or seven named 240 listed.

I think what did the female name for me was the fact that she is Swedish, and maybe the big plastic headlights.

Actually my mom named Inga when she had her (she bought here new in 85) and I have no idea where the name came from. When she gave her to me, the name came with the car. Even my brother and sisters ask how is Inga doing when we see each other.

Regards,

Paul

I've had my car for almost 20 years but never got around to naming him until recently...not sure why. But Vlad seems to fit. It's short for Vladamir (I think). I got the name from the Battlebots TV show I used to watch.

Most definitely,

65 T-bird "Betsy" as she is a heavy girl.

92 245 "Bleen" a contraction from her color... blue-green metallic.

00 Mitsu Eclipse "Red", for the fiery red headed attitude, yes, I do mean flames!

06 XC-70 "EXE" , easier to say than "XC Seventy and she executes well.

Didn't really start naming vehicles until I acquired the current wife (oops!, excuse me, that would be the LAST wife, I've been told). Our first and second 240s just happened to rank alphabetically when named and then it just became an obsession to find the most fitting name starting with the next letter.
