radio install ... 200 1986

I've searched, but haven't quite seen this, so, my question is relating to installation of an aftermarket stereo.

Today, I took out the factory fitted radio from the top slot and found nothing besides the radio. the harness had been cut for an aftermarket radio installed down below, which is no longer there. Now, I will fish out the wires to see what I have, but my question is, how does an aftermarket stereo mount in the top space, I assume there should be some brackets or something back there, but there was nothing, just the fascia and radio held on by two screws.

I always love unraveling other people's work. aaargh.

(there is a good parts yard I can go to to get any brackets, so those won't be a problem, if there are any.)

Thanks,

Jeff

Alright, have the wiring harnes and radio all connected, but the power (I assume power, red wire) has a female fitting at the end, but I can't find anywhere to hook it up to.

I thought maybe at the back of the instrument cluster, far passenger side, there is a tab, but something is hooked up there now.

    Any ideas?

I will just wire it directly to the fuse box if there isn't a factory solution that I can find, but would certainly prefer to plug it in the correct spot.

    Thanks.

Run a wire and crimp a connector to the right side of fuse box and use the radio fuse, it may be #1. You might need a switched and always on power source depending on what you radio calls for.
I prefer the lower radio compartment ever since a low life broke into my daughters car and stole her 3 year old $100 radio. I actually mounted the original radio back into the upper slot as a decoy. Dan

thanks, did that while waiting. There was nothing there on #1 so put it there since that was the radio fuse. I finally have music again.

        Thanks,

        Jeff

Dang, and I thought I was finally going to get rid of that old ugly radio and top mount. Do you need a Volvo Equalizer? :)

I have an original radio (top mount) complete with original harness, and I also have an aftermarket top mount. I also have the equalizer. Contact me, and I will see about getting them to you.

When I pulled the factory radio from the top slot of my '86 there was no bracket. It was just held in by the two mounting screws on the left.

On the '91, there is a tab on the back of the radio that slides into a slot that supports the rear of the radio. You have to take that tab off the old radio and find a way to adapt it onto the new radio.

I got a kit to make a standard rectangular radio fit the Volvo dash opening at Best buy - not in the store - back in the stereo install shop. They sold it to me over the counter.

They also sold me adapters that would bypass my old amp and plug the original wiring into the new stereo. In your case, that may be a challenge since someone has been cutting wires before.

Metra sells a mounting facia/bracket that fits into the upper compartment. You will need to find and identify the wires for the installation. Dan
