Glove Box Organizer 200

I found out today that IPD has discontinued the Glove Box Organizer. I have not a clue as to why they would do such, but they did. Sadly, they chose to do so before I finally decided to order one. Does anyone have a line on one, or have one that they would part with?

I *had* one - but frankly, it wasn't all that great. It kept collapsing under any weight (like tape cassettes [remember them?]) and I didn't feel like epoxying the parts so they'd stay together. Looked good in the catalog but wasn't so hot in actual use. I think I pitched it years ago.

If you're clever and you can find some 1/16 - 1/8 thick plastic stock, you could probably make one that works even better than IPD's...

Yes I'm pretty sure Stickbuilder could do that quite easily!

I made the first prototype of the organizer this afternoon. I made it from 3/16" Lexan. It's clear and the light shines through the plates and illuminates what is on the lower tier. The prototype is pretty smooth, and did not require any glue at all to hold itself together, but I did use some cyanoacrylate glue on it anyway. I don't think that I'll do this on the next one. I made the horizontal shelf so that it contacts the square bulge on the left side. It's really stable. I wonder is there would be a market for these, if they were all made from this clear Lexan? Anyone want one?

Dan, if you want, I'll send one to you to try and see if you like it. You are the closest to where I live. No need to return it, or pay for it. Just give me your opinion of it.

Thanks, I'd be glad to give it a try. Maybe you could post a picture of it and get some others to look at it and comment. Dan

Dan,

I'll cut one for you today, and send it over. I'll leave the photo posting to you. I have yet to get pics to post here. I finally was able to post in the main gallery. Sorry, but I'm not too computer savvy.

Dan,

It will be coming to you via express mail. I'm sending it out in the morning.

The vertical piece goes in first, and it slides in on the right side of the glove box light. There is a faint channel in the box that you can see. This piece is marked with tape (Right Top). Then the horizontal piece slips in to the slot in the vertical piece, (there is a corresponding slot in the horizontal piece and the top right is identified as well). The vertical piece must go all the way back or the door will not shut. The horizontal piece slides under the square protrusion on the left side, The unit needs no glue or adhesive, but is held in position by the box itself. Let me know how you like it. I'll get the edges a little smoother, once I get the program into the CNC router. This one was hand cut, and shaped. I hope you like it.

It arrived today but I knew I was in trouble when I read Do Not Bend and it was bending! Yup the USPS strikes again the big piece (shelf) was broken in half.
It looks like a good idea, first thoughts is for stability you may want to have 2 cross pieces holding the shelf.
I will try to get some acetone (glue) and see if it can be fixed. Shipping will need to be in a rigid box to keep the USPS from breaking them.
Thanks for the effort.
Dan

Dan,

I really hate that. You can use thin cyanoacrylate glue (buy it at a hobby shop) and it will stay glued. Actually, stability is not an issue once it is installed in the glove box.

The USPS can't keep me down, I was able to fuse the broken pieces back together again with acetone. Not a pretty fix but it's hidden in the glove box.
This is a nice idea, what you end up with is the glove box divided up into four compartments separating all the stuff so you can see it and get at it better. It won't fit the large tub of wet-wipes my wife stashes in there but I can put that in the trunk with all my tools. Thanks for letting me try it out. Dan

I'm going to make one from clear Lexan or plexiglass. It should serve very well, and being clear, will allow the glove box light to illuminate the lower compartments at night, which is something that the unit from IPD did not make allowances for. If it proves out, I might offer them at cost to those who would wish to have one. I'm thinking that 1/8 or 3/16" stock should prove substantial enough to make it worth having. I'll keep y'all posted.

Let's see if Dan likes it first. They don't fit anything but the 240 series. I hope that you have one, and I'm just asking due to your nickname.
