B23E noisy Tappetts 200 1980

Hello, my trusty B23E has regulartappetty sound I have had two different mechanics look at it and they both say the gaps are fine and to not worry about it. I guess it is old but it is in great condition, doesnt blow smoke or lose oil etc. I have heard that these originally had rubber "Hushers" fitted to the top of the valve stems? Is this right on a B23E? If so is it a simple job for a handyman like myself to pull of the cam and bits to fit these or do I need a mechanic to do this? I am kind of hoping I can dismantle this with ease but not sure what is involved and what skills are needed to perform the job, does it need re-timing etc? I can handle nuts and bolts but timing is something I cant accomodate with my skills (and I don't have a light). Any pointers would be appreciated, ie; will it kill the tickety tick etc...?

Removing the camshaft is straight forward but does involve loosening/removing the timing belt. If that will be a problem for you best to leave the job to a professional. The good news is the cushions you need will cost you next to nothing. If the motor is getting due for the belt change and you really can't stand the clatter, go for it now.

Thanks for responding mate. The clatter is getting annoying and I am a bit fussy to boot! I have never removed a timing belt so perhaps this is one for the professionals. I guess now the cost to get this done will out strip the benefit? How long do you think it would take a mechanic to do the job? If it is only an hour or two then it would be worth it. Any idea of the cost of a timing belt as I should probably change it at the same time.

if you've owned the car for a while and the noise is louder than you remember, make sure the cam is getting enough oil. the oil feed next to the head bolt could be clogged a bit and cause that. let it go long enough and the cam will seize in the head. as for the hushers, i think they were installed on the motors that got knock sensors. i've had a bunch of heads apart and i don't remember them on the 81 and earliers. maybe they'll retrofit. good luck, chuck.

      B23E idle adjustment 200 1980

which way do I screw it to slow the idle, in or out? I had a quick turn on it but couldn't notice the idle changing at all, do you need to turn it a few times? I only turned it about half a turn, worried it was not the right adjustment or that I would unscrew it too far and have an engine bay full of springs and washers etc...
