Clearcoat peeling, 1991 240 200

I have a 1991 240(blue metallic)that has the clearcoat on the hood peeling in some spots. Can I revive the shine with wax or compound without having to replace the clearcoat? Thanks.

The best solution is to buy a color that tolerates sun. I am very flexible about the cars I buy - so long as they are RWD white 5 speeds.

The band-aide fix is to sand out the blisters with ultrafine wet sandpaper, then spray it with aerosol clearcoat. I use Duplicolor clearcoat from the auto parts store.

It will NOT look good, but at least it won't look bad from a block away, which is what it does now.

I am doing the top of the rear bumper on my daughter's BMW tomorrow. Wish me luck.

Nope. Welcome to the world of sun-stroked Volvo paint...but you might be able to feather back the peeling clearcoat, and then recoat...but with what? Today's options for paint are way different then 15 years ago.

But know that you are in good company with thousands of others with that sun-kissed "blistered" look. New paint (even if it's spot coating) and then parking in a garage will improve your smile factor. Sorry
