What year did Volvo change their Window Seal method? 200

Next windshield change, I'm going to go with the Windshield Seal to replace my '89's Goop in place and chrome trim.
I looked at FCP Groton's Site and searched for '92 200 Windshield Seal. I find plenty of windshield seals for porsches and Jags ..nothing for the Volvo 200.

Aside from giving up the stock look of the Chrome, any negative thoughts on going this route?

I think 1991 was the magic year. I'm getting the windshield replaced on my 1979 242 and I had to ask for the 1991-1993 style windshield for this to be done. I think the seal comes with the windshield, rather than being a separate part to be ordered like with the older style.

Just got the '79 242 back from the shop. The replacement windshield is the new '91-93 style with the black seal. The shop treated a rust bubble spot at the base of the passenger A-pillar, sandblasted away the surface rust under the old window, and then the glass guy put the window in. No problems with the fit, and the car looks good. Unfortunately, the rest of my trim is chrome, not black, so the match is not perfect, but still okay.

The brand of glass used was Pilkington. There's a slight drizzle out and I'm leaving the car outside. Will let you know if there is a leak.

Thanks for getting back to me.

The Seal, you left that up to the Glass shop to get?

You called up and said I want Glass for a '93 and that was basically all that was needed to be said?

I found out the the glass and seal for the '93 windshield come as one assembly, much like the glass and seal for other modern windshields, like in my wife's Honda Pilot. If I went with the older windshield, I would have had to get the ribber gasket separately and supply it to the installer, as I think these are normally reused unless damaged, like mine was. The windshield replacement cost me $312.

I had the windshield replaced in my 89. The shop used the new style seal, but they one that they used was too narrow (the corners rolled under and didn't cover the whole frame opening), so they ordered a new wider seal that did the trick. I don't know if they were just cheaping out with the first seal or what, but you can definitely get the seal separately from the windshield (or at least an auto-glass shop can--I haven't tried to do that myself).

Your issue probably wasn't with the new seal being too narrow, the windshield is supposed to be spaced off the bottom window opening (can't recall by how much)with spacers. If that isn't done, the windshield will slide down too far and the upper window opening corners will be exposed. Another issue that can crop up if the windshield isn't spaced off the bottom of the opening properly is that when hitting a pot hole, the windshield has a tendency to crack from the center bottom.

I had the windshields in our 89 and 90 244s replaced with the new style setup, no problems whatsoever.

Hmm, I thought all 4 corners were exposed, but you could be right, and thats really good to know for future windshield replacements! The old windshield was actually cracked center bottom--I'll hope that doesn't happen with the newer one.

Thanks Laine, I sort of have that problem with teh Stock Chrome on my car. The upper corners are falling into the Frame opening. It just isn't sitting right. Oh, and I wont be doing this either. Cut a rear quarter off and weld a new one, yes, Windshields....not my cup of tea.

Right. 1991-93 is the new style. Had my '86 done about a year ago and very happy with the result. I first went to the Volvo dealer and inquired about windshields. They referred me to their glass man who came out to the house and changed it in my driveway. Lifetime warranty against leaks as long as the glass is unbroken.
