central lock system 200 1987

About 6 months ago, I installed an OE used but in mint condition central lock system in my 240. Everything was ok until recently. I use the driver side door central lock system to open the rest of the doors, there is quite a delay before the rest of the doors open. Sometimes about 3-5 seconds delay before the these doors open, sometimes it takes over a minute.

What seems to be the problem? My friends jokingly say my 240 is possessed.

I had a simular problem.
My car door locks would unlock themselves within
moments of me locking the doors.
My problem was the wires in the driver door at the
locking system, the
wires were bare and were shorting out one another.
I separated the wires and wrapped them each in
electrical tape. All is well now.

Sounds like the relay is hanging up....watch out because it will drain battery sometimes.

Thanks for the advise. So the culprit is the central lock relay? How does it drain the battery? Can this relay be replaced by an ordinary Bosch relay that is commonly sold in the market?

If the central locking system relays are the problem, then yes, they are the commonly found cube-shaped relays. The ones to use are the five-prong, DPDT type. Don't know the power rating, you'll need to look on the covers.

There are two and they are located on the relay-mounting rail below the center dash air vents and just forward of the coin tray. Not hard to get at.

A hung up relay drains the battery by continuing to feed power to the lock actuator magnet even though the lock has moved. Usually the locked position, as that's where one leaves it when shutting down for the overnight.

However, the actuators are subject to damage from aged hardened lubricant and just plain rust. BTDT

If you pull up on the driver's knob while pulling up on the knob on the passenger door, is there any movement quickly, and complete movement later?

A question for you - was something wrong with the central locking system that came stock with the car? Is your addition a remote locking?

Good Luck,

Bob

Hi Bob

My 240 did not come with an OE central lock system. I found an OE, complete used set with the harness, relays and actuators and installed it. Everything was working fine for about 6 months, till I noticed the delay once the drive side lock is triggered.

One more thing, once all locks are open, there is a follow-up/delay "ticking" sound. It sounds like a delayed lock mechanism disengaging. The same central lock system can be triggered on/off with the Clifford remote security alarm system that was also installed.

I hope you can help me zero-in on the problem.

the problem is usually bared wires on the wrap around switch on the lock cylinder. I have not replaced the relay but I think it's on the back side of the center consule.

Where are these bared wires exactly located? So these bare wires are wrapped (intertwined) around the lock cylinder, is this on the dirver side lock mechanism?
