Radio shorting out - common problem? 700 1990

All the other issues I've run across so far in my new purchase have apparently been common issues with Volvos of this era - headliner, fuel door hinge, tailgate struts, loose tailgate.

Now I've got another one - the radio is shorting out. It will randomly turn off, then sometimes come back on. Lately it's been off a lot more than on. It's not losing power completely because it's not asking for the code when it comes back on - it just mysteriously starts playing music again. I took it out of the dash and saw no loose connections in the wiring harness.

Is this a common problem like all my others have been? Is there a cheap fix to get the stock unit working again, or should I pull out the Crutchfield catalog and my credit card?

Mac

Does that radio have a separate amp?
if so reseat the connector, there's 2 plus 12volt wires there.

It is a radio unit with a separate cassette unit underneath it. I don't know if it has a separate amp, where would it be located if it does?

What does the amp connector look like? (if you happen to remember) The connections on the back of my unit are:

      >Main wiring harness
      >Round connector to cassette unit
      >Round connector to ???
      >two-wire female connector - one orange, one black wire. Not connected to anything, and I can't find a male plug anywhere behind the dash that would match this female plug.

        Hi Mac,

I think you have the pinout on another post.

I never had the stock radio. I have a radio/CD changer
that works grea. I think Best Buy will sell a CD unit
        with installation for about $100.

The amp has a round DIN connector back to a radio DIN connector
and a rectangular connector E (14 pin) a harness to the speakers and power
the rectangular connector at the radio D a 12 pin - harness to power
        and the antenna motor stuff.

        Bill
