swapping aw70 with aw71--keep aw70 torque converter? 200

brixters,
i found a decent aw71 donor tranny from a 92 244. i'm swapping it out with my original aw70 tranny.

i've went through the archives, but i have some questions.

1) should i keep the aw70 torque converter and use with the aw71?
2) good time to replace overdrive switch if still good?
3) i couldn't see very well, but i believe the overdrive bushing is still good.
don't replace?
4) i think i'll replace the real seal while the tranny is out, good idea, right?

any r&r tips would be very much appreciated. i'll replace the tranny rod seals, tranny mount, etc.

thanks as always.
regards,
byron golden

I've picked up and carried an aw70 and an aw71 by myself; I'm really not overly strong, so I'm sure the two of you will be fine. I've also moved them in a wheel barrow with ease.

I have an aw71 in my n/a '93 240. I used the 71's torque converter and have had no problems. It may move the shift points up a tiny bit when on the throttle, it is a higher stall torque converter. I haven't noticed too much difference. But I also don't see why you couldn't use the 70's TC.

Are you sure its an AW71? A 1992 244 would typically come stock with an AW70.

      thanks for your reply,
no, i'm not sure. my little volvo pocket data book from the uk indicates the aw71 was used from 89 on.

if it is stock, then i guess it's an aw70.

      i didn't have a jack, so i didn't get a good look at it.

one question...can 2 people pick this tranny up off the ground?

      thanks,
      byron

        Byron,

If you can find a AW71L out of a post 92 940 you will get the mileage advantage of a lock up torque converter and the more robust roller bearing in the tailshaft. I changed over one of my 1990 244's to a 1994 AW71L and I'am in the process of changing the other to a 1993 AW71. I also changed the rear main seal, shifter shaft seals and torque converter seal. Also check the 2 shifter bushings. While doing this job I also applied a liberal coat of 3M rubberized undercoating the transmission tunnel. This is one of the best noise reductions I have done and recommend this.

      thanks chuck,
i'm making a list of things to purchase to replace before installation. i have a few parts already.

i'll get the o-rings as you mentioned.

I swapped out the transmission in my son's 91 244 with an AW from an 87 turbo about a month ago.

Personally I would keep the torque converter with its original transmission, but someone who has more experience than I do would provide better information.

If the kickdown cable is moving freely in the replacement I would spend some time dripping some trans fluid in at the end while holding it up with something so gravity will work for you in lubricating the cable.

If I were you I would replace the front seal, the two shift rod seals, and the rear seal. If the bushing is in good condtion without much lateral slop it will be OK, but it is never easier to replace than now.

The linkage bushings are easy to replace now as well. Make sure the linkage rod is not rusted so as not to be able to be adjusted once the transmission is in place.

Now is the time to be sure all the wiring associated with the overdrive is in good shape. Replace if necessary.

Make sure that the solenoid makes a nice audible "snap" when you apply 12v. If the top of the solenoid is starting to break up (or even if it is not) take some silicone RTV and cover the entire top to encase it and seal out moisture. Hang onto the solenoid from the bad transmission.

    Good luck.

    Randy

      thanks randy,
good info. i have the rod seals already and i'll get the rest of the seals and o-rings on now before installation. i'll try to convince the guy to give me the at cooling lines and the od solenoid.

yama mentioned that the 92 244 had the aw70 as stock...in my pocket uk volvo book for the 240 shows that the aw71 was used from 89 on. i couldn't get a close look at the tranny, but at 171k miles & $200, i thought it was a good deal, even if it's a n aw70. any idea?

      question:
by the way, can 2 people pick this tranny up? believe it or not, the junkyard people won't do that to avoid any injuries. so, i'll have a friend help me pick this tranny up and put it in the back of my 245.

      regards,
      byron

My transmission experience is limited on the Volvos (thankfully), but as original application I have only seen the AW71's used on turbo cars.

The transmission can easily be lifted by two people to bring it home. Be aware that fluid will run out at the most unopportune time. Be especially careful of the dipstick attachment point on the pan if the dipstick is removed; perhaps you can position your helper on that side (grin).

Protect the interior of the 245 from fluid that is bound to exit the transmission.

        Randy

Transporting trannys is a messy endeavor. Been there. I would suggest using one of those big heavy duty cement mixing troughs to put it in. That way if it leaks(and it will) mess is contained to trough and doesn't mess up your cars interior. Put a strong piece of wood under bottom of trough to support the weight. By the way I have had both the L trannys(locking torque converter) and the non L version . If you can get the L version as gas mileage is better and not sure about this one but have been told they are more solid too.
