Survived a hard hit by an SUV but now POWER STEERING PUMP gone south. 200 1991

Here's what happened: I gave it to a neice who had an accident. The front left fender was crushed in by a lady driving an SUV. She survived fine and surrendered the car back to me. I replaced the LF fender, LF A-frame, ball joint, LF headlight, turn signal, bumper, hood opener, etc, and brought my trusty Volvo back to life. The car has 158,000 miles on it and runs fine.

One problem though, is the car won't start in wet weather. I waited for a dry, clear night, got a water spray bottle, and sprayed the spark plug wires and distributer cap, then cranked the car looking for sparks arcing. No dice. With some difficulty, the car started. I heard a belt squeal. Ignored it. Next morning, I noticed the belt connecting the AC to the engine had fallen off. Not broken, just fallen off. I tried the cap on the power steering pump. It was loose. I tightened it and something snapped and now the cap won't tighten. Three questions. 1) Can I replace the cap or does the whole pump have to be replaced? P/S wasn't working when I got the car back. 2) What caused the belt to fall off? Is the AC generator bad? The pump is the kind that has the reservoir and pump together. It still has fluid and the pulley spins freely. 3) I hear P/S pumps don't go bad often. This pump looks fairly new compared to the rest of the car (I haven't seen the car in more than two years.) Is it possible that the hit caused the power steering pump to break?

Appreciate any advice out there.

Thanks
Cuddy

Air bag. Heard of those things. Yeah it has one. In what order do you do the job and keep driving the car? Steering rack first or motor/tranny mounts first? If I do the steering rack, might as well do the RS ball joint, switch out the front shocks, and rebuild the front end. But dollars and energy are short. Should the motor/tranny mounts be first, and is the tranny mount a job for Superman?

    Thanks

Trans mount is not so bad, you might need to lower the cross member and or slightly raise the trans to make it easier. Dan

The blow to the front suspension probably finished the steering rack.Re-built or used will fix that.Does it have SRS? Observe precautions when changing rack to avoid damage to contact reel.Try another PS cap.

Check alignment and condition of pulleys.Inspect rubber ring in balancer for slippage, check bearing in compressor for wobble or tightness.Use new belt, old one is damaged from coming off.

If maintenance is due, plugs, wires cap, catch it up.If crank position sensor is ancient, replace it.The old car has had a traumatic event.New parts will help it recover.

Very sound advice. Deeply appreciated. I will drum up a steering rack. What is SRS? The pulley on the AC generator does look a little warped, it's not quite straight. Will investigate. Indeed the trusty Volvo has taken a hard shot, but I'm glad it's home and it's wonderful to have it back.

      Thanks again.

      Best,

SRS means air bag, you know the claymore that prevents you from going through the windshield during a front end crash!

If your AC tossed its belts, most likely the accessory mount bushings have failed. If that is the case, the engine and trans mounts are probably blown out as well. The engine and trans mounts must be replaced to avoid SIGNIFICANT damage and performance problems!
