Need a rear axle inspection cover for a 1988 244 without pinholes 200 1988

I need a rear axle inspection cover for a 1988 244 without pinholes.

I have the one with the pinholes from 260k miles. Point me in the right direction or email if you have a good part.

Thanks, Jackie

    Need a rear axle inspection cover for a 1988 244 without pinholes 200 1988

    Hello,

The Dana 30 rear axle is very common and is used on all sorts of vehicles like Jeeps and in fact the same inspection cover fits Dana 27 and Dana 25.

New cheap chrome covers are easily available or you can buy a nice new billet aluminum cover or even a clear plastic cover if you want to spend alot more money.

For anyone reading this thread - the JC Whitney cover IS NOT the proper cover for a 1988 and newer. It has only the sensor holder - no drain plug.

The reply for the cover from Tasco volvo in RI provided the proper cover.

The JC Whitney cover might be OK for 85 and older volvos. NOT the 1988.

Hey Eric, I called my mechanic, He is not able to find Dana and any number on my axle. He does report the Volvo part number of 1023543 on the differential cover.

How can I tell if the JC Whitney cover will fit my car? Have you made this swap and had it work on a 88 (no ABS or positraction)?

"I called my mechanic, He is not able to find Dana and any number on my axle. He does report the Volvo part number of 1023543 on the differential cover."

I don't believe that 1023543 is the Volvo Part # for your cover. You need one that takes the speedo sensor, and the Volvo # is 1209772-1.

The current dealer price at Tasca Volvo is $198.05, discounted to $146.90 as the "internet price".
          The gasket 1377332-0 is $8.35.

I ordered from Tasca Volvo and from JC Whitney. Hopefully one will work.

              Hello,

Lucid is correct and you will need the original Volvo cover. The Volvo cover will have the threaded hole for the speed sensor for your speedometer.

Although the JC Whitney cover will physically fit on the rear end, it will not have the bung for the sensor.

I am sorry that I steered you in the wrong direction.

Eric, thanks so much for the url & the info. My old cover is deeply rusted and one sent to me was almost as bad. I had forgotten about POR 15.

I just had the same problem with my 88 245 about 3 weeks ago. Tried to find replacement parts for it but the trouble is that if you find a parts car that has been sitting then you are going to run into the same problems.

I pulled the cover, cleaned it up and filed off the rusty spots with a hand file. Once everything was spotless I washed it down and wiped it clean and then used POR 15 Epoxy putty to patch the holes in the cover. After this cured I painted the outside of the cover and re-installed it with a new gasket.

Hasn't leaked a drop since then. With the POR 15 you can make it look very good without much trouble since it is pliable until it sets up. You get a good hour to work with it and then once it sets it sands / files like plaster.

If this doesn't hold for good next time I'm going to use poly resin, or perhaps epoxy resin.

    Hope this helps.

    JB weld? 200 1988

Try using JB weld on the inside of the cover.
