shock change frequency 200 1993

Good afternoon,

What has been your experience as to the frequency of strut insert replacement? I imagine they don't wear quite as quickly on a new car since all the suspension parts are tight for awhile and stuff isn't moving around as much. I'm pretty sure I changed out original strut inserts on my old 740 even though it had 150,000 miles on it. So, how long do you expect OEM replacement shocks to last on a 15 year old car with a couple hundred thousands miles on it.

Thanks,

Ron

As BlueDot pointed out, this is more a matter of driving and road condition than miles.

That being said, from what I read here, most 'basic transportation' bricksters change shocks/inserts every 150k or so. The performance enthusiasts do it more often.

I have a '91 245 with 260k with all original shocks that is really due, but I am putting it off due to cost and the fact that doing front strut inserts is such a pain.

I did the strut inserts on my '90 244 when they started to weep oil at 230k miles. They still passed the rebound test. The improvement in the way the car felt and held the road on curves was dramatic. I really need to do that 245.........

Road and driving conditions vary over a large range, and Volvo struts and shocks last a long time. When they fail the rebound test, leak a significant amount of oil,or a shock bushing fails, replace them.

When doing a front end overhaul(ball joints, bushings, etc.)on a high mileage car would also be a good opportunity for replacement.
