Speedometer Retaining Threads Stipped 200

So the threads for the bolt that holds the speedometer cable into the trans is stripped on my M46. I was wondering if anyone had an thoughts on how to fix this?

One thought I had, and it may work depending on how the trans is designed, would be to simply drill it through and put a nut on the top and run the bolt through... would this work? I don't know if there are any internals on the other end of the retaining bolt or if that portion of the transmission exists only to retain that cable?

Thanks,
Phil

Any reason you can't rethread it and use a slightly thicker bolt?

I'd be hesitant to drill all the way through. ATF may be on the other side.
