my #2 cyl recently when out because of a[ burned exhause valve]. so anyway i have to do a head job my mechanic says but he says maybe the rings in that cyl might be bad also?is it posible for the rings to be bad with only 160000 miles on a volvo? or is he trying to pull a fast 1 on me? 1996 960 with 160000.

Agree with Dewfpo, rings may be bad, but not worth the cost of doing. With the valve job done, it will not be any worse than what it was like before losing a valve.

I've been on the forum for the better part of ten years and have seen a few folks have a burnt valve or two on a B6304 (not counting bent valves due to a T-belt letting go) but never bad rings due to normal wear and tear.

If I'm wrong, someone will surely correct me.

I have a 740 with 340,000 miles and a 240 with 265,000. Both 4 cyl non turbo. I have good compression on both engines. Both motors have never had the heads removed or piston rings. I think your mechanic is full of shit. I would demand to see the burnt valves also. Dave
