Timing belt tension pulley needs replaced, do timing belt too? 200 1988

Hey all,
I pulled the top timing belt cover off to check on the belt and tensioner. The belt looks fine, i think only 40,000 on it, but the pulley is off round. I have a new pulley in stock, is there anyway to just replace that instead of having to do the whole timing belt?

I replace my belt every 40K so I'd do the whole thing. It's only 2 hours of your time. Dancing around sliding a Tensioner in there would probably cost you more time.

I think it would be very difficult to replace the tensioner and not mess up the timing. I assume that is the goal? At 40K miles it is about due, so just replace it.

so, after getting everything apart and taking the timing belt off, making sure to mark everything correctly, i'm still stumped on how to take off the darn tension pulley. I've read the fact about using the nail to hold the spring back, but my question is, what then, do you slide the whole thing off? the spring and the pulley and the nail at one time? If not, how do you hold the spring back while trying to wiggle out the pulley? hmmm, kinda stumped on this one. thanks guys

In addition to what Dan said make sure you have the new tensioner assembly tapped fully into place- against the front of the engine. Failure to do so will cause the belt to track wrong, move part way off of the pulley and contact the timing belt cover.

Compress the tensioner spring and lock it in place with a nail or allen wrench. Remove the bolt that holds the tensioner in place. The tensioner will now pull away from the engine. Take the nail out and the tensioner/pulley will come off. The tricky part is getting the new tensioner /pully attached to the spring and mount. You need to compress the spring and have your nail ready to lock the assembly in place. Dan

thanks guys, once i figured out what was going on, it was relatively simple, just had to use a little brute force since i didn't have a vice. thanks brickboard...
p.s. always remember to check that your re-built calipers match up, just bought one today with the halves mismatched, darn.. i always forget to check...

I find replacing the seals the more troublesome part of the job. The difference between replacing the belt and not replacing the belt will most likely be zero more work since the tensioner coming off will most likely cause the belt to move off one of the gears. If it comes off your already going to end up doing the work you'd do with a new belt. I think its closer to 80,000 to 100,000 for replacement not 50,000 like some newer models.
