rear seat cover r&r 200 1989

Hi, all...

I am swapping a black interior from a wrecked 244 into my tan interior 245. I know that the rear seats are not interchangeable, but I was wondering if anyong had ever removed just the seat covers from a sedan rear seat and adapted them to a wagon seat. I realize that there would be some extra fabric at the side of the rear backrest, but maybe it could be trimmed/tucked behind the foam? What are your thoughts?

I considered trying this to put 84 turbo 244 seats in my 93 wagon to the point that I stripped the covers off both types of seats. I found that the cuts were extremely different for both the bottom and back. I did try fitting the bottom cover on and it looked terrible. To have it look right you would have to unsew everything, re-cut the fabric and re-sew it complete with piping. Even then you would not have enough fabric to wrap around the front of the bottom, and no vinyl/carpet at all for the back of the back. The wagon backrest cover is like a pillowcase, the sedan is just glued to the front of the foam (completely different). Plus the armrest appolstery is different.

So from my experience it is not practical to try. I ended up looking a little harder in the junkyards and eventually found a wagon seat that matched my turbo appolstery.

I have thought of doing the same thing, and as long as you're patient, take your time, and have an eye for detail - it should work fine. You might have to make a trip to the fabric store for the seat back, but I'd go for it.

A staple gun, hog rings, needle and tread should be all you'll need. Let us know how it turns out!
